So I am struggling with an older laptop and its starting to PISS ME OFF!.

I have a HP Pavilion DV6-3050US laptop. It has both a built in low power GPU and dedicated card as well.

I am having SERIOUS trouble installing the driver for this card configuration. I cant seem to get it to where I can turn off the dedicated card, and on the low power one. In addition the drivers that AMD's website keeps installing keeps not opening and telling me I dont have a AMD graphics card installed.

Here is what my Device Manager says is installed (note the exclamation point even after installing the "correct" drivers according to the AMD website)

I have downloaded the AMD uninstaller and run it like 5 times. I have installed just about every combination of drivers I can think of and it still doesnt seem to work 75% of the time.

Here is what uninstaller I used and the drivers I have installed.

It installed this version of Catalyst Control Center:

Here is what that version looks like:

Here is the process I was doing that I would assume is the correct one.

1. Run the uninstaller
2. Reboot the PC
3. I downloaded the AMD Mobility Radeon Driver Verification Tool and ran it. It selected the drivers for me.
4. Once it downloads the driver I hit "Install" and follow all the instructions of the wizard
5. Reboot.

After doing this I still don't see any options to use the Switchable graphics.

I even looked at the HP website and found the drivers for my original GPU, the file to download is below:

That installer wont install the AMD drivers....

Any suggestions to get this to work?

Its particularly annoying in that I use the HDMI out port and am unable to fix the Overscan the GPU adds when watching on my Plasma TV. I also want to be able to use the switchable graphics so when using the laptop in normal use so I can conserve the battery. There are also other GPU functions that seem to be missing from this set of drivers.

I had the same issues with my DV-6. Go to the HP website and punch in your model info. Get that driver. It's older but everything works. I've had this problem in the past with my DV-6. Good luck!

Tried that, downloaded the driver. Catalyst Control Center wouldnt install off that exe file (note I reference that with a screenshot)

Did you try it before or after attempting to install the drivers downloaded from AMD's site. Where you simply trying to update the drivers or did the GPU stop functioning so you decided to update the drivers?

The problem is that many laptops cannot use AMD's generic drivers. The drivers must come from brand name of the laptop because they are custom drivers. Installing AMD's drivers may have "corrupted" something in the Windows Registry which prevents you from installing any drivers. That means you need to do a fresh install of Windows to fix that possible issue.

I had been keeping up to date on Windows Updates which had periodically asked me to update the AMD Catalyst Control Center versions, and I had downloaded and installed them.

Somewhere along the line I started having issues with Catalyst Control Center loading. I have has issues with my desktop (also a AMD GPU) and got it to work after doing a uninstall, wipe and reinstall.

So after reinstalling from AMD's website I still got nothing, so I redid the process using their beta drivers as well, and still no joy.

May thats gonna be a PITA to redo as I then have to redownload all the updates. But more importantly all my programs that are installed are going to be gone.

I know I can do a system image to an external drive, but that wont help me here since the system image would contain the incorrect AMD drivers.

If I do a backup of my files, it will backup all my documents (which I dont have any on this PC) but it wont backup the programs and their customized settings correct?

If I can find a way to ensure my configuration of the user profiles on the pc, their respective programs and settings are backed up I dont mind redoing a Windows install.

P.S. If I get this working, should I simply ignore the AMD updates in the future that are listed in Windows Update.
