Hi guys,

Looking to replace a few of the computers around the house with a thin client or two. I currently have a few of the PC's running a remote desktop into a windows 7 VM.. so the only part now is to replace the PC with a thin client.

Can anyone recommend an HP thin client? Since citrix offers a free 10 license Xendesktop deployment... I would like to go that route.


Your thoughts? Does anyone use a thin client setup @ there work?
 
I use an old wyse winterm to RDP to a VM on my server... got it for like $10 on ebay
 
OP, What all are you trying to do with this Scenario? Are you looking for full VDI deployment? Or just a basic RDP access? The two possibilities are miles apart. and would require potentially different thin clients.
 
With his mentioning on video and audio with Remote FX me thinks hes looking for something like PCoIP for view he needs graphics and intensive ones at that to handle the UDP stream and decoding of the RemoteFX data.

Going to need something with a video card and a standard $10 thin client is probably not going to cut it as they usually have 1-4MB vid cards with old RDP not RemoteFX

Thanks for your response's thus far. I'm not looking to game on the thin-client (though would be cool to do so). What i am looking for is the ability to play flash movies and media through RDP or XenDesktop.

Thus far I have tried several win-terms without luck when using windows XP pro and windows 7 pro. Windows 7 pro is a much worse experience then windows XP.
 
That's part of the issue that you'll have with both the RDP protocol and the cheap thin clients. Neither are designed for any real Audio/Video usage. Basic Audio sorta works, but Video is sketchy at best. As dasaint said, you'll need a higher end terminal to do this. I hadn't seen the 10 free license XenDesktop yet, that would fly but you'll need a terminal that's HDX compatible for optimal results.
 
If you want to use RDP to access Windows virtual machines and have a great audio/video/media experience you should use Windows 8 and/ or Windows Server 2012. MS have made many enhancements to RemoteFX and RDP 8 which makes flash, pdfs, videos etc perform as if you are connected locally.

At the moment there are no thin clients that support RDP8 and enhanced RemoteFX except for the MS RDP clients in Win8 and Win2012 Server.

I'm waiting for thin clients that support RDP8 and RemoteFX and I was told by a Wyse sales rep that they don't have an ETA as Microsoft have not released an updated RDP client for Windows 7.

remote FX was in windows 7 and 2008r2. I thought remote FX was able to be done with the windows 7 client? I saw many of youtube vid's about it.

Yep I know that RemoteFX is available in Win7 and Win2k8 R2, BUT Microsoft have made massive changes to the protocol in Win8 and Win2k12.

Yes, but the RDP client in Windows 7 does not support RDP 8 and the enhanced RemoteFX.

If i setup a windows host and enable the remoteFX feature set... Will i get anything out of it when connecting via the citrix client? Or does remoteFX only come in when using remote desktop?

AFAIK RemoteFX is a feature of RDP, so unless the Citrix client supports RemoteFX (which I don't think it does) you will not benefit. If you use a thin client like a Wyse R10L which is "RemoteFX Enabled" you will have an enhanced experience.
 
Joshu is correct. The R10L also supports MS's RDP/RemoteFX, PCoIP, and Citrix HDX. So it'd be a single stop for testing.
 
We use Zero clients from Leadtek/Connexxus and EVGA where I work, but we use them with PCoIP not RDP or RemoteFX.
They are great for video/movies, etc (we edit video on the client in CA from the PC in CT)
But that setup requires a physical computer and DVI capable video card and a PCIe 1x available slot.
 
You can also have a look at this thin client from HP which is an all-in-one powered over ethernet.
 
using the feature set integrated with vmware tools... the v10l does flash perfectly. The downside is that it requires windows XP to work correctly.

Scrolling through web pages is horrid.
 
GOOD thin clients aren't a good deal. look at the HP ones up to $500. for a small custom setup you might as well build your own SFF pc, or buy some zotac or whatever!

these companies could probably make a $150 ARM windows RT thin client supporting rdp 8 no problem if they had their sh*t together. instead we sit on our hands and wait

honestly I'm not sure what beats that goofy new chromebook for thin client value right now. nothing probably
 
i just got a couple all in one neoware 1ghz via processors, 512mb ram, 1gb flash xpe, 17" monitor for $53 each on ebay. they run ltsp over pxe boot pretty well, especially with remote apps.

Cheap enough to pick up and try things out.
