It would seem someone got their hands on a prototype HP Slate and, to be honest, it looks rather impressive for a tablet. You should probably check out the video before it gets yanked.

Correction: Will HP pull an Apple and send a SWAT team to raid this guy's house too?

No edit button?

Anything short of Android on a tablet is just tard fury. You CANNOT run W7 on a device that doesn't have a mouse or touchpad, it just doesn't work. I don't care how many tweaks you add to the system.

Other than the HP logo on there looks nice. still don't know if i would want to replace my 17" multitouch laptop with a slate for all uses, but i could see where it would be nice if i only needed something small and ultraportable.

Yes.... you absolutely can.

On phones we type with our thumbs alot with touch screens, Id like to see the same thing on a slate. split the keyboard in half and move it to both sides of the screen. small enough to use only our thumbs.

Consumers will love this "feature": The CTRL-ALT-DEL button!!!!!111

Yes as proved by this video "let me open up a new tab....I think I hit the button....oh oops gotta try and hit the button again...".

Works really well....

Not every touch screen is the same. As the video says "uploaded from my iphone" I've used the other HP touch stuff, and it does take a little getting used to over other devices...

good arguement....

Wasn't the Win7 slate cancelled?

Agreed, they should stop prioritizing the standard keyboard layout and emphasize on alternative layouts. Thumbtyping is the primary way of inputting on a mobile device and the standard layout gets hard to use when applied to slates.

I find it amusing and telling that they added a dedicated Ctrl-Alt-Del button. As if the Apple fanboys didn't already have enough fodder to harp about.

Yeah different devices could pose an improved experience but from what I have seen unless the OS is built to function with just your finger its hard to make stuff work. Even if you tweak the OS, applications that you install that are not designed to run with just your finger are going to be crap....hence the Android suggestion, apps are designed from the group up with this in mind as well as the OS itself.

Is this where we start drawing the line between Tablets and Slates? The HP slate is more like a Tablet with its full OS.

Hardwarwe CAD button makes sense IMHO. Much faster than a gesture or bringing up the on screen keyboard to do it. It comes in handy. As if Mac users don't have to end tasks from time to time. F' apple fanboys. Who cares what they harp about. Just ignore the tards. :)

Well, if this is a prototype that button makes a lot of sense. It is natural to have code that is in development to be unstable, and you need a way to kill or reboot a misbehaving device. So for a prototype going to developers working on it, such a button is logical. Dev versions of consumer products are usually different. I would be extremely surprised if such a button exists on the final product.

Yeah, I thought the Slate was going to be WebOS now?

Gah, no edit. Also, the button could be for the login screen, which if you are logging into a corporate domain or something *requires* you to hit ctrl-alt-del before logging in. Business users would be seriously pissed if they couldn't log into their tablet, lol

From what I see, I agree. I've read several opinions that Windows 7 is not optimal for touch-only devices, and from that demonstration I have to agree.

An OS designed, from scratch, to be touch based is the only way to go.

Which is why HP bought Palm.
WebOS is built for touch input.

I like how he is saying it is "so fast" while it isn't responding to his touch scrolling.

Pretty poor looking performance from the video. Looks like it runs on an Atom processor.

I think I would like to see an included pen though. Writing recognition? hrm...

Guys, didn't you watch the first part of the video? He still has he plastic cover on the device...that's what's making the screen less responsive...the plastic covers manufactures ship with mobile devices aren't meant to be effective screen covers. They are meant to protect it from having scratches in shipping.

I'm willing to bet it'd be more responsive once the thick piece of plastic is out of the way.

Win7 might not be built specifically for touch screens, but throw in a decent stylus and things become more interesting.

The iPad — the Apple product most comparable to the HP Slate — doesn't require its users to end unresponsive tasks. Unresponsive apps are closed automatically.

I'm not so sure. Initially it seemed quite responsive. He seemed to have no issue clicking on various points of the desktop. It became problematic when he tried to scroll, not because his taps weren't registering but because what he was doing was simply misinterpreted. With the Windows DPI setting at its default, he would need far more pointing precision to make using the Slate enjoyable.

This doesn't actually seem like a bad product, but God damn would I get tired of having to press a physical button to open/close the OSK. That's just terribly unimpressive.

There are already better Windows 7 slate devices out or coming that are better than this, I'll have to see the final product and price to make my judgement but this will be suprise coming from me, not impressed at all. I'll take my W100 over this any day.

As for the buttons, not that big of a deal, the W100 implements a similar idea and it works very well but of course its a much different device.

There were some comments there about the speed.

The guy was activating it from a cold start. demonstrating the longest possible time to boot. It actually turns on faster than my iPod 3G. Windows7 *does* have an auto sleep feature built in.

Doesn't windows have the ability to detect when you put the focus (click) on a textbox? What exactly is the keyboard button for?

So much this. Why do companies keep trying to run windows on tablets / cell phones. Windows is a great OS but it was not made to be portable. I dont get it

Not to mention the extremely active modding community backing Android. Just take 5 minutes and look at all the stuff Cyanogen has added over the years, just amazing stuff. You don't see this for Windows OS's other than Last7 (which is awesome but doesn't have any enhancements for mobile devices).

While that was a very limited video demonstration, I wasn't impressed with its "finger friendliness". He was struggling with it a few times.

Yes there are ways to engage the standard Tablet Input Panel (TIP) keyboard and writing pad without a dedicated button but its not automatic. The W100's keyboard button launches Toshiba's custom keyboard but I can still engage the standard TIP as on any other Tablet PC.

Granted it's a prototype, but that looked like a very awkward, unintuitive, underpowered experience. If I'm going to use a full blown desktop OS I'd much rather have a tm2 than something like what I just saw. I'd be more impressed if it was running webOS.

Because one can use the SAME apps on their slates as their desktops and its seamless. My W100 runs Office (which is actually pretty finger friendly due to the ribbon), web browsing tends to be much faster and plugins work, tons of reasons. Windows touch on a screen this size can work fine, hell it works fine on smaller screens.

Windows has been adding touch features since Vista, a LOT was added to Windows 7 and you can bet that Windows 8 will add more. Android isn't all that great on slates right now either and the better Windows touch screen devices are adding their own enhancements like the W100 and ExoPC.

A touch only device like the W100 will slaughter an iPad or any Android slate when it comes to productivity even if the touch interface isn't as good because the apps for these tasks are SOOO much better. And unfortunately these generations of Windows slates are not coming with pens and ink in Windows is light-years ahead of the iPad and Andriod. Combine touch AND pen and you have the ultimate in slate productivity. But if one is looking at an entertainment device, no Windows isn't the best option, for now.
