Okay so basically I never use the scan function on my fathers HP psc 2175 printer (multifunction), well he starts complaining that it doesn't work. So I check it out and sure enough it doesn't. After a while, I figure its time to to reinstall the software. Problem one, cant find the disk, so I get the install software off HP's website.
Okay, so it goes smoothly until, and according to thier instructions, I have to plug the USB cable into the computer. Thats where I think the problem starts.
Windows starts displaying that new hardware is found. It seems to take over the install process. Nothing happens on the install window, but little windows in the bottom right (actually that stupid bubble pops up) saying what its installing (psc 2175, HP psc 2175 printer, HP scanner, etc.) Then it stops with no indication of being finished and in the HP install window, the "next" button highlights, so I click next and it finishes.
Okay so I click on scan and it says...
When I get to step 4, after clicking confirm deletion it takes about 2 mins to unsinstall. Then asks me to reboot? I close that window (have tried this both ways, closed window and rebooted when prompted) Unplug cable and continue to step 6, but the Wizard never appears, only the little pop-up bubble in the bottom corner, and that says nothing of status. When its done, the thing shows the same errors.
When I reboot when prompted, I get back to Windows and it starts with the Hardware Wizard bubble in the corner saying its installing, but it does not solve the problem.
Long story short, is there a way to disable the auto detect feature for the USB cable, because I think its the problem. When the HP install asks me to plug in the cable, Windows hardware install takes over, I dont want that to happen. I want it to at least ask me if I want to install the hardware (printer).
I am writing HP an email once I post this, but thinking I will get an answer from here sooner than there.

I go to HP's website and thier instructions on this problem are...An error occurred communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again
1. Right-click My Computer (in Windows XP, click Start first), and then click Properties.
2. Select the Hardware tab and then click Device Manager.
3. Click the Plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
4. Click the USB Composite Device entry to highlight it, and then click Action and then click Uninstall. If a screen appears to confirm the deletion, confirm the deletion.
5. Disconnect the USB cable to the all-in-one, wait a couple seconds, and then reconnect the cable. This should restart Windows device detection (Plug and Play).
6. A New Hardware found screen may appear, click Next through all of the screens that appear for the Wizard to install the USB Composite Device. Click Finish once the wizard completes.
