Hp Pavilion a6712f start up issues.

So im looking at someones computer for them, its a Hp Pavilion a6712f running Vista. First off i believe its the harddrive but can't be sure. When you boot it up it goes to the HP startup screen or the boot screen and locks up. I even tried leaving the hard drive unplugged and go into the bios but i couldn't get past the boot screen then either. There are no beeps either. I am just trying to fix this today, if i can't get it done soon oh well. I have to go back to New york in the morning...

If you're trying to narrow things down to whether or not the hard drive is bad, find out which brand makes the drive, go to that manufacturer's support page, download the troubleshooting software, and run it from a CD or bootable thumbdrive.

But what if the problem isn't with the hard drive? Have you run test to see whether or not the motherboard or processor are bad as well? (Have you looked at the troubleshooting sticky?)
 
Thanks tiraides, It was the harddrive. There was an Sd card in the memory slot which was preventing it from going into bios or doing anything on the boot screen. So i put a different harddrive in and now just have to install Vista back on it.
 
After you install the OS, go back into the BIOS and revise the boot order so that the hard drive is the first device that is read by the system.

If the SD card was the source of your problems, you don't need to replace the hard drive. You simply need to change the boot order (or remember to leave the SD card out next time).
