Since I loathe my 22" LG widescreen, I'm updating it to a 24" S-IPS or MVA panel. To go with it I plan to revisit the golden age of CRT technoogy and run a 21/22" screen (20" 4:3 flat panels are overpriced).

These HP (well, Sony) units come up on eBay all the time and get good reviews. What I'm wondering is whether or not they can do 1600x1200 @ 120Hz (for gaming)? It has enough bandwidth, but this doesn't necessarily mean it supports this combination. The specs sheet doesn't say, so I'm hoping someone here is running one of these babies and can enlighten me :)

Thanks in advance!!!

No, the upper limit for the HP P1130 (or Dell P1130 or Sony G520, they're all the same thing) is around 100Hz at 1600x1200. None of the P1130s I've tried have been acceptably clear at that resolution/refresh rate, but your results may vary...

Thanks, I had a feeling it wouldn't. I've got the CRT itch tho, especially for older games that have restricted resolutions and look awful due to flat panel scaling. Do you know if the Compaq P1220 is the same screen, as that got rave reviews.

I don't know much about it, but it's definitely not the same tube. The P1220 is a 22" Diamondtron, and the Dell/HP P1130 are rebranded Sony G520 Trinitrons.

I'm seeing conflicting information on it so I don't know whether it's capable of the same refresh rates -- some sites have it at a max of 130KHz horizontal sync (which would give it the same refresh rates as the P1130) and others have it at 121KHz. I think that 121KHz may actually be correct, since this seems to be an older model.

edit: if you plan on buying P1130s from eBay, I'd be careful and make sure the seller has a good return policy. I've been through 3 new-in-box P1130s from eBay that all had problems.

Most helpful :)
I have always had more luck with the Mitsubishi tubes, so I'm glad to hear it sports a Diamondtron. Bit more research shows it has a 340MHz pixel clock (vs 370 on the P1130) so I don't think it can possibly output 1600x1200 @ 120Hz. But it looks like there isn't anything affordable out there that can anyway, and as I don't remember tearing being as noticeable on a CRT I'll just run without v-sync at whatever refresh rate it can manage ;)
