I just got an HP P1130 (21") on ebay. Supposedly it's the same as the Sony G520. I'm running it side by side with my NEC FE991sb (19"). To me, the text on the NEC looks sharp at 1600x1200. However, the text is noticeably blurred at 1600x1200 on the HP and very blurred at 1920x1440 and 2048x1536. To get near the quality of the NEC I have to run it at 1280x960 so that the text size makes up for the poor focus.

Is this normal? Are Diamondtrons that much better than Trinitrons?

I've adjusted the convergence in the monitor controls but it doesn't help. Could adjusting the focus knobs inside the monitor help? I've adjusted old 14" and 15" monitors in the past that didn't have convergence menu controls, but I don't know if making physical adjustments is different than making adjustments in the menus on newer monitors.
 
Definitely doesn't sound normal, I have a 3 year old 21" Sony G520P that I've been running 1600x1200 @ 85hz since it was new and never had focus problems with text. The recommended res for the G520 is 1800x1440 so if anything 1600x1200 should look great. Your monitor wouldnt happen to be refurbished would it? ..I've heard more bad things than good when it comes to refurbished CRTs :( Will the seller let you swap it out with another P1130 perhaps?
