So I started researching Synology NAS and then came across some hp microserver thread and was like hmmmmm.

Currently (Gaming box/"nas"):
  • AMD FX 8 cores
  • Windows 8 storage spaces (horrible speeds will drop from 100-1mb)
  • 256 ssd (OS)
  • 16gb ram
  • 2x 1TB WD Greens
  • 2x 2TB WD Reds
  • XAMPP host

Primary intent:
  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Movies
  • Serviio (transcoding 1080p)
  • LAMP/XAMPP
  • NAS-->Crashplan backup
  • "High" transfer rate

Bonus:
  • Run VMs (IE AD, Centos web, etc)

Any recommendations on whether its beneficial to go with a GEN 8 or buy the cheaper GEN 7 and mod it up?

Thanks!

Cheaper, lower power consumption + you can fit more drives in the old one (easily get 5x 3.5 and a 2.5 OS drive). New one looks much cooler, much faster.

I made my choice and picked up a n54l yesterday @ the egg for 239. Mine will be a dedicated zfs NAS, so I don't need a ton of cpu.

i am in this same boat, i got 2 x 3TB drive and an SSD but i wanted to use the box to stream video using something like PS3media player to go to my WDLive boxes...
