I'm trying to install FreeNAS 8 from DVD. The PC starts to boot from DVD, then a second later the PC resets, back to the POST screen. I'm using a Rosewill external DVD drive, and was able to successfully install CentOS. But I have the same reset problem booting with FreeNas 7 liveCD, 8, and 8.0.1 Beta DVDs

Sounds like the optical DVD is getting renamed as FreeNAS (FreeBSD kernel) detects it, probably from initially a USB device until it discovers its a DVD and renames the device acd0 or something along those lines. It seems to happen mostly on certain external opticals depending on what USB-IDE/SATA bridge they use, which FreeBSD and many other OS's can be temperamental to. CentOS and many other Linux distro's have methods to work around this issue, but on FreeBSD and derivatives its a limitation of the USB stack. Unfortunately I haven't seen a way to work around short of connecting an optical to an internal IDE/SATA controller or installing from a USB stick that won't get renamed during boot.

Went through the trouble of connecting an internal DVD drive - same reboot problem.
The problem seems FreeNAS does not like the onboard SATA controller in RAID mode. Once I put it back to AHCI mode, FreeNAS booted from CD and I was able to install to a USB stick.
Since I want to set up RAID-1, I might have to stick with CentOS, or find some other solution.

Ah, I seem to recall a message on the mailing list about someone with the same issue but don't recall a solution. If you want to use onboard RAID for the OS then sticking with CentOS is probably your best bet.

I found the same to be true and then set up the raid within the FreeNAS GUI
