Hi guys,

Please excuse this post about such ancient displays, but I need help.

I just replaced my mixed (2407/2405) Dell dual 24" monitor setup with two used HP LP2475Ws. They've been out for a number of years, but they were very highly regarded when released, with a wider color gamut than the 2407.

I'd like to calibrate them, not only for color accuracy, but also to match each other. With my Dells, I had a service menu that gave access to the RGB offset and gain settings. I can't seem to get to a similar menu with the HPs. There are RGB controls under the "Custom Color" menu, but there's no real description as to what those settings do. I'm assuming they're the RGB gains, but I'm not sure.

There is a service menu that you can get to by powering on while holding the menu button, but it doesn't offer any additional calibration settings.

The HP official service manual indicates that powering on, unplugging the power cord, and plugging it back in will bring up a factory menu, but I've not been able to get that to work. I've tried every combination of power button/switch, menu button press or press & hold, but no factory menu appears.

Anyone know how to get to this mystery factory menu?

Thanks.

I dont know about any Factory Service Menus that could offer more deeper calibration controls. Thats usually the realm of TV's that have hidden menus where you can really mess the device up if you do not know what you are doing. Anyway, the Dell has a 2-point calibration that controls to correct color temperature on both whites and dark colors. The HP, as do most monitors, have only 1-point calibration that can correct only white colors and rest is left for ICC profiles you can make with a colorimeter. So yes, it is the same as RGB Gain control. If you want to match them perfectly, get a colorimeter. Spyder 5 will suffice if money is critical.

And congrats on the monitor. If you can deal with the over saturated colors AdobeRGB color space creates for non-color managed programs it is a damn good IPS monitor. Other than having overshooting overdrive that makes moving objects sometimes leave a blue trail. Its also almost completely IPS glow free that seems to plague current IPS monitors. I had one for years and its still used at my parents place computer.

Here's a (poor) example of what's in the service manual. It's word-for-word identical, as far as I can tell:

Download HPL1706 Datasheet PDF (LCD Color Monitor)

That's outlining how to calibrate with a Chroma-7210 colorimeter, but it's pretty clear there are color controls in the factory menu. I suppose the manual could have been generated from an old firmware version and newer firmware gives the color adjustment to everyone.

I already have 2 colorimeters, a Sypder4 and an x-rite i1 Display Pro.

And I'm used to getting into the hidden menus to calibrate home theater projectors (albeit with better colorimeters).

In any case, thanks for the reply. I've got it looking decent using the user-mode RGB controls.
