HP Laserjet P2015 "ghosting"

I'm having some problems with my printer that maybe someone can diagnose or help me fix...

It's a HP Laserjet P2015. What happens is when I print something, all of the actual text will be clear, but there will be a bit of a "ghost" about a 3rd of the way down the page from where the font appears. It only does this in small splotches (only a bit of the content is ghosted, not *everything*). Is this a problem with the printer or the toner cartridge? Anything I can do to fix it?

this will get worse, i'm almost certain of it. If you are lucky it would simply be a faulty drum (likely integrated into toner cartridge) and the issue will go away when it is next changed. if you are not lucky then the issue may run deeper. If i recall correctly the 2015 is pretty good, so it should be just the cartridge, there have been a few HP models here and there that we have had NO END of trouble with and simply passed them along to surplus purgatory.

Did you (fairly) recently install a new toner cartridge by any chance? a refurb/off-brand cartridge?
 
Yes, it's the drum surface. A free replacement cartridge should be be available under HP warranty. Ask them to send you a new one.

Also, sometimes printing several blank pages makes the ghost leave.

Nope, this is the original toner cartridge that came with the printer. I've never changed it before.
 
If the issue doesn't bother you too much, just let the cartridge run its course. If the ghosting bothers you, change the cartridge; if bloodypulp is right i would definitely try and get one under warranty though i suspect HP will try to pull something to get out of providing anything for free.

I think the printer is *technically* out of warranty, so I doubt they'd give me the time of day, but I've never dealt with HP support before. Might just be worth it to buy a new cartridge. I thought I was saving money in the long-run with laserjets, but man, even the toner is expensive!

Generally toner is expensive per cartridge; but cheap per page; if you're out of warranty on the printer and still on the first toner cartridge, that's lasting a long time (or you don't print much, but toner also doesn't clog like ink can)
 
Yep, most likely the drum needs to be replaced. If installing a new drum doesn't solve it, the next place to look is at the fuser. Basically, either the toner on the drum is not completely transferring to the paper or it's not getting swept off properly, or toner is getting stuck on the fuser roller and in either case getting transferred to the paper on the next revolution. If you want to determine for certain which case you have, you might try interrupting mid-print and seeing if the ghosting exists after the paper leaves the drum and before it reaches the fuser.

In every printer I've ever owned, drums and toner cartridges are considered consumable items and won't fall under your warranty's coverage. I wouldn't ever try to get a free replacement for one of those unless it was obviously faulty right out of the box.
 
Follow-up for anyone who stumbles upon this in the future...
It was the toner cartridge. Replaced that and it's working perfectly now. Sucks that the thing died, about 1200 pages before it was due, but glad the entire printer isn't shot ;)
