i've recently bought a hp destop and upgraded to a 6800gt card..........of which runs at 71 degrees celcius on idle. Alot of ppl told me to look at airflow of the case or buy more fans. Is it true that hp destop has bad airflow? will another case fan fix it?

OEM cases are notorious for having ultra crappy airflow. If it's a standard desktop case like the ones we have at the office, there is one high speed 60mm intake fan in the front which also doubles as the cpu heatsink fan. and then one fan on the power supply.

If it's a mini/mid size tower, you're at least better off since you probably have more room to work with.
Post some pics so we can give some better advice.

holy crap that is high, i was complaining about mine reaching 37c while in game(idle at 31).

Yes OEM cases are horrible for airflow. Might i suggest cutting a fan hole in the side of the case right next to the agp. And also look into a blow hole. when you are having heat prob always look at airflow first.

JEEVES

Recent Dells have great airflow. With all the ducting, I'd say that they are better than most modded cases. Plus they do some basic cable management. I've dealt with two Dells lately, the PowerEdge 400SC and 1600SC. The first featured a single temperature-controller 92 mm fan covering everything but the power supply. The other had front and rear 120 mm fans, pretty quiet ones.

Does anyone think that a pci fan might cool my 71 degree celcius video card, but the way i'm thinking is that its just blowing hot air to the card. Any opinions at all?

Their towers may be one thing...but their desktops would be better off not even being made. They are so cramped inside that there's literally NO airflow from front to back of the case. I put a temp probe in the case at work (Dell GX270 w/P4 2.8C) and it was around 79c in the center where the probe was.

crazy high temps.

suqmaster - PM me and I can post your pics for while.

IMHO you should return the 6800gt and get a 6800oc and spend the extra money on case cooling and a new case.

pm is "private message"

and here's a place to host them. I had to search it up b/c I host all my own pics, but here it is...not sure what all you have to do to get a picture uploaded.

YOU SUCK!!!! I'M KEEPING MY FREAKING 6800GT THAT i WAITED 3 MONTHS FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I completly understand I have one myself.... but i have also spent over 300 dollars on cooling.... so you might want to think of sinking alittle more cash into your rig now that you have a 400+ dollar vid card....

just my $.02

I can't load any images on the demo acount since I was only limited to 200,000 bytes.

My HP Pavilion 8772C that I got 4 years ago had horrible airflow within a super cramped space. The only fan in the case (excluding the PSU fan) was ducted from the back of the case and onto the CPU. It doubled as an intake and CPU fan, and there was no exhaust fans. Case temp was 45C.

Id add 1 front intake fan, 1 side intake fan, 1 rear exhaust fan and 1 top exhaust fan. All 80 MM This will get ur air moving. Itll mean cutting a hole in the top and in the side but itll be worth the effort to give ur wicked vid card the care it deserves.

I had the same sort of problem with my Dell that I purchased not long ago. The main case fan just has a chute to aim it at the cpu, there is no real cpu fan. I just ripped apart the whole system because I was fed up with the shitty setup. I just installed all my hardware:
Intel 865PE chipset
Northwood P4 3.06 w/ HT
Dual Channel 400 mhz ram 1 gig
Radeon 9800 pro

into a new Antec Sonata case. I would recommend doing the same thing. The only problem I had that you might have is that the shitty Dell motherboard wouldn't work with a standard cpu heatsink/fan. I bought a new motherboard and you might have to too.

The only option I have is to cut out the side panel for the fan, the front side is occupied by the hard drive and the top is occupied by the psu and drives. Does anyone think that adding a quality 80mm fan on the side panel that blows right at the vid card will cool it down a bit?
Right now my hp destop has 8 fans, 2 from psu, 1 from cpu, 2 from bfg vid card, 1 exhaust from the back, 2 on hard drive.
If I ever do get a intake fan on the side panel, do you guys think its a good idea to get one of them vantec spectrum to increase air movement?
