I haven't tested all monitors so I don't pretend to know which is the best but I'm satisfied with the HP 25xi I bought on clearance. So, I'm just giving a heads up that I just saw the new model, the HP 25xw available on amazon. (It's still 1080p though, the standard model isn't 4K yet.)

I watched Star Wars yesterday on my HP 25xi and it was great. I've also played the pre-alpha demo of the new Unreal Tournament (available for free if you register at unrealtournament forums) and it's nice. I find 25 inches is the right size.
 
I've got one of the older HP 25's and it's been great. I keep wanting to get a little bigger one but the image quality is so good that I'm kinda afraid to get something thinking it won't be as good. Best thing is I only paid $220 at Best Buy for this thing. I'll probably end up waiting til those LG 34" monitors come down in price before I upgrade. I think those are the perfect size of screen for me.

If you're talking about the HP 2509m, I had that one for I believe 4 years before it started blinking and turning dark. I could have it on though like 16 hours a day so I didn't completely fault HP. It took me 2 days to adapt to the HP 25xi which is an IPS from the HP 2509m which is a TN. The IPS does make a difference in seeing at different angles. With my old TN monitor, I could move up and down in my chair and see different colors.

For a 34 inch though, you might want to go up to 4k. I still have my HP 2509m in a box thinking I might buy replacement parts to fix it next year so I have a monitor for my old computer (or two on a KVM switch).
 
Ive got the 2509b. That might be the one after the "m". Ive had mine about 4 years and its got a lot of use. Still works perfectly. Makes me want to buy another HP when I finally do replace this one.

Dont think Ill go 4K at least not for a while. My 42 year old eyes cant see much of a difference on a 34" screen not to mention the gianormous GPU demand that resolution puts out. I think the 3440x1440 of the LG 34 is just about right. Itll still be a big draw on the GPU but it wont be ridiculous and I should still be able to get great performance out of my 290x that Im gonna be keeping a while.
