well yall i am planning to join the intel side of things once again. I am new to the whole mini atx cases and dont know anything about the motherboard. I have heard from a fellow co-worker that it is a good ocing motherboard. Just havent completely decieded about the ram though I am currently thinking about some pqi PC5400 XBLK stuff but am not sure if i dont need to go any higher then that.

I really want to be able to push this proc to at least 3.5 gigs maybe 4. I am not hoping for anything to extreme.
 
I would personally go AMD X2 if you want dual core...but otherwise it looks good...maybe 2 barracudas and Raid em?

And im not sure, but if you are OCing, i think 4GB of RAM will hold you back (unless im reading your specs wrong). But that may just be AMD.

I tested a newer vaio with the intel pentium d chip in it and believe it or not it had a pretty elaborate cooling system that took up lirerally the bottom back quarter of the tower. in spite of the massive maze of ducting, and the oversized heatsync idled around 65-68c it literally burned at the touch. Go amd for dual core...
 
k its only 1 gig the board supports up to four. I thought the 630's where single cores. K what are the single cores then??
 
Yeah, you're right, the 630 is a single core cpu and it runs pretty cool. I don't know why the above posters were talking about dual core..

it really depends on what this rig will be used for. email? f.e.a.r.? multimedia machine? server?
 
For single core and/or dual core go AMD! Only way to go right now because as of right now all AMD cpus (for the most part) are faster in pretty much every regard. Also, if you don't mind waiting a few months.. I would recommend getting an M2 CPU when the time comes, they are sure to be excellent CPUs as well as AMD is moving to the new 940 pin and DDR2.
 
the rig will be used for gaming purposes. i understand that amd is coming out with a ddr2 proc, but see I want it in a mini atx case and i cannot find one that supports 16xpcie slot. (well at my job anyway.) i have also seen that intel vs amd at my job and into which the intel actually was faster. both systems where not oced in anyway and both where running at the same speed.
 
you actually wanna use intel for gaming??? :p go dual core amd you will not regret it, IMO you shouldnt have to wait for the M2 socket, amd chips dont gain that much from higher speed ram anyway (pc3500+) just go 939 dual core and put the money you save from using ddr ram vs ddr2 to a good video card :D

You guys are right, I got this P4 at 4.02 ghz and a GeForce 7800 GTX at 470/1200 and every single time I tried to run Unreal Tournament 2003 I get like 20 to 25 fps @ 800x600.....and pretty much every game.

then my friend brough his amd machine 3000+ with 256mb of ram (2x128) and GeForce 5700 Ultra.......boy that thing was flying, he got over 200fps with every setting set to highest and 1600x12000, I couldn't belive it!! just awesome!

I just can't seem to understand when the game required such low "recommended" hardware to run to game but yet the P4 @ 4.02 and the 7800GTX was more than twice the power needed, yet so much lag.

just for the record, something is definatly wrong with your machine if thats all the FPS you are pulling in unreal03 regardless of CPU

Agreed, those numbers are absolutely ridiculous. I have a 630 at stock clock speed (3.0 Ghz) and a 6800 vanilla, and I average 40 FPS @ 1024 x 768, all graphics/audio settings at max, 16 - 20 bots (UT2004). I'm sorry, I just have to call shens on that poster. Either that, or the guy's being sarcastic.

Eh, I've seen both Intel and AMD fanb0ys post things even more over the top than that in all seriousnous, so I never assume anything :eek: .
 
The P4s are fine for gaming. The A64s are faster in most games, sure, but when you are comparing 200fps vs. 220 fps it doesn't really matter.

The P4s are still faster in certain applications, including a lot of media stuff, which is what netburst was designed for, and hyperthreading does make multitasking far more pleasant (though an X2 could do it just as well, it would cost a lot more...)

Honestly though, as much as I like Intel, the only current chip offering they have that smashes what AMD has (at least on the desktop platforms) is the P4 840EE. Dual Core + HT = 2 logical and 2 virtual CPUs for ultimate multitasking freedom and bliss, you'd need a dual-dual opteron system to beat that going AMD.
 
i dont really care about anything over 60fps..cause ur eye can only see at 60fps anyway. all i want to be able to do is play at 1600xby whatever it is (frogot it sorry.) or 1280x forgot this one to. With all the eye candy on. will i be able to do that with this setup??

At stock speeds? No way (check my post above and my rig link). If you OC it, possibly. The two video cards you were considering are starting to get a bit dated too.
 
Do you mean the plain jane vanilla 6800? I'd at least go for a GT version, or an ultra. Or, you could check out one of the ATI X800pro/X850xtpe type cards, also great for budget minded performance.
 
yeah totally, the x850pro vivo can be found brand new on ebay for $200 and it can be flashed to xt pe speeds and pipelines.
 
The new 6800 GS is looking to be a pretty cost-effective alternative to the 6800 GT too. I haven't really looked into it, but the price might be competitive with the 6800 vanilla.
 
how is it you guys are only getting 24-40fps in UT2004 at 1024?
with everything cranked I got like 50-60fps lowest @ 2.94Ghz... ? :confused:

Depends on the match. Plus, an 6800 Ultra and a 6800 vanilla aren't exactly comparable. If I do Antalus with 20 or so bots, then yes, I'll get 50-60fps at highest settings. The map where I only got 40fps was one of the newer Onslaught maps (again, with 20 bots).
 
Thats a very similar build to me. (Check below) only difference is mines the 945P and have already got the 7800. The 630 I've found is very stable, but didnt like me playing about with it too much for OCing it. But to be honest I havent needed the extra speed. I run FEAR at over 40-50fps, and I'm waiting for the faster Pentium D's to come out, or the M2s, although I have no idea wether it will be compatible with the chipset, till I upgrade the processor.
All round thats a very good build.
