How's this look?

The ECS motherboard is making the build look bad. They are a win/lose situation. Plus the Nforce 4 Intel Edition Chipset has alot of problems from what I hear. Heard its incompatible with many harddrives and memory, has random issues and whatnots. I know this because im looking for a new mobo. Im going to get a Abit AW8 for 109 off Newegg tonight. Might want to reconsider you decision on the motherboard, or less you will have the patience if you run into any problems.

I can be almost certain that the Nforce 4 chipset wont work with the 9xx series also.

I was just looking at the mobo you're getting, and it looks pretty dang nice. I love the fact that is has passive cooling; quite is good. So with that mobo it would bring me up to $557. Still seems like a great price for those components.

With that being said, im going to hate to say this to you. The 955X chipset doesnt work with the 9xx series of processors. Only the 8xx series and everything below that. Yes I know, Intel royally screwed us over with this chipset for each new series buisness.

Well, it says it does support Pentium D, and it looks like several people there have gotten it to work. What do you make of that? And no, I'm not ordering today..this is still in the "hypothetical" stage of things. ;)

Ok. Yeah I dont know about the 9xx though. Im not doubting those people. Im just going with what Intel said. The 9xx is 65nm and you need the 975X chipset to run the 9xx series. Do some roaming around on the Abit forums and see what you can find.

Are there any good options for SLI on the Intel platform? I mean with nVidia, not ati's crossfire schtuff :). Also, what kind of RAM would I need for the Conroe that claims it uses a 1066 bus... can I use a divider to make 667-800 RAM work OK with it and just overclock from there?

I looked at Abit's website, and according to them all you have to do is flash the BIOS to get the 9xx series to work with the AW8. Doesn't sound too hard. :D

Can you please link me to that part of the site. Im not doubting you and trying to be a ass, im just having a hard time navagating there site lol :D

This makes me mad because I would of brought a 920 3 weeks ago when I got my 630!!!!!!

No problem. ;) Here's the link to the page I was talking about. But this is probably going to happen. I was considering an X2 3800+, but the PD 930 is ~$80 cheaper with the same performance.

OMG that makes me mad lol. I would of brought the 920 3 weeks ago when I brought a processor. I been building this computer paycheck by paycheck lol. O well, I know its an option in the future. Yeah I would get the Abit board though. Trustworthy brand, 955X chipset, passive cooling, its nothing but goodness.

What's the difference between the AW8 and the AW8-MAX? Besides $20 I mean. :p The website says the MAX has better cooling solutions, but they look the same to me.

Raid and dual Ethernet from I can tell. Both features I dont need so that is why im going the AW8. Why spend 20 dollars for something im never going to use?

Exactly. :D Thanks a bunch for all your help! I probably would've gone and gotten that ECS if you hadn't showed me the Abit. ;)

You are misinformed, almost all 955X chipset mobos will work with the presler 9XX series CPUs without a bios flash. Presler (9xx) will run on i945 and higher chipsets.

Yeah but I dont have 200 to spend on a board ;) Just placed my order.

My rig will almost be complete!!!!! Got 512MB of OCZ Gold Series DDR2667 also. Yes I know the memory size is weak lol.

Yes, I can confirm the AW8 works flawlessly with a PD 920. The BIOS flash enabled more options to do with the processor, but even before updating the bios it worked perfectly.

Currently running my 920 on an AW8 at 3.73ghz on stock cooling. There does seem to be a common problem of getting the AW8 over 270 fsb though.

Otherwise, it's a great board, and very easy to play with. :)

also if your still planning on getting xp home, theres a deal to get it for around $50 not too shabby.. linkage

edit: its the upgrade version, i didnt realize at first

yea, i'm lookin for an AW8D-Max since i heard it's supposed to be priced around 140 USD, an i975 board with conroe support (supposedly). and it just needs a bios flash, lol. Whoever said i955X chipsets don't support it needs to go back and do more research since my friend had a PD950 on an i955X mobo overclocked to 4.5ghz, lol.
