Hows intels 2.6C (800fsb).... is it worth the upgrade from 2.4c...or should I spent the extra cash on the 2.8?

Thanks for any advice.

its for my buddys computer.... hes NOT going to OC.

I was thinking of the ABIT "IC7-G MAXII ADVANCE".... to go with it.

odds are that 2.4c will overclock to 3.0 (250fsb). just set your ram to 5:4 and youll be able to run even with pc3200 ram. if it will save $175 to overclock instead of upgrading i think your friend should consider it.

but if he's dead set on not overclocking, i wouldnt bother with the 2.6 or the 2.8 and go straight for the 3.0

Not all motherboards will overclock to 250fsb, especially with SiS chipset.
To have a 2.4 runing at 3.0GHz you need the best air cooling solution or a moderate water cooling. There is no way he's going to be able to run that 2.4c at 3.0GHz with stock cooling.

If you are going to upgrade, go to 3.0c or 3.2c. The 3.0's are about $200 bucks from Newegg/Zipzoomfly.

i ran 3.3 on the stock intel cooler just fine, my temps were in the high 50's

Lol well simple fact you ask if a 2.6c is better than a 2.4c hmmm its obvious to me its 200mhz faster ... so if you friend dont overclock he can expect to get a whopping 2 fps more in games so oh ya man its way better!!!

2.6 C is good, and your friend doesn't want to OC so I'm not going to be all like "Whoa, it can hit this speed or that."

If your friend already has a 2.4 C, it's worthless to spend money for a 200 Mhz upgrade.

thanks for the replies....

nah hes not OCing... he has a POS right now... maybe 1.5 or something. we're just building him a new one and debating what processor to get.

Oooh, a Willamette 1.5, those weren't that good...yeahhh.

If you're looking at Intels, I think a 3.0C chip would be a better choice, and they're maybe only $20 more than a 2.6C.

Lol.. it's only the voltage.. if it's stock voltage.. it'll run as hot as stock 2.4..

I know plenty of people who hit 250 fsb on stock with a 2.4c, (actually my 2.8c does 250 on stock), why don't you try going for another mobo instead of the few extra dollars on the processor, and get the same speed while getting a better motherboard.

No dis, but I don't think that's true. IC's run much hotter at elevated clock speeds, even with the same Vcc. Has to do with device physics and current density.....but, trust me, faster always means hotter operation, in every instance I've had personal experience with.

It may not be much, but it is what it is.......

hmm.......if you had a 1.5willy, a new mobo is imperitivie. I'd like to recomend something new: an SiS 655TX chipset mobo via ASUS's PRS800D-E. Grab it for $100 at newegg, and get a 3.0GHz proc to go with it. That way, if you do overclcock, this mobo will reach a 250fsb(though it won't go much higher then that).
