I will be using this motherboard/cpu/ram as a server, but first I'm going to move it to a bigger case from the dell it came in. It's a pentium 4.

You can see the way it was setup in the dell in the picture. There is a fanless heatsink on the cpu, and one fan on the back of the case. Normally, there is a green phunnel going from the heatsink to the fan on the back (you can see the phunnel on top of the case) but I took it off for the picture.

The new case has a lot more airflow. Will it be enough to just have a fanless heatsink on the cpu? I really dont want to throw money at it... Or should I somehow glue the case fan from the dell onto the heatsink?

I wouldn't have spent money on a newer case, just run it as is till it dies...
 
I didn't spend money on a new case.... I'm using another old case thats a full tower with lots of hard drive bays

when I said "new" i was only differentiating between the two

Just check the CPU temp and if it's within good range you're fine.

I really wouldn't GLUE a fan on to the heatsink. If you're really set on getting a fan on there try zip ties... the heat from the HS might burn them though...

That is a Dimension 4600 or 4700 right?

The CPU fan is installed backwards. It is supposed to be sucking air out.. not blowing air in like it currently is setup to do so.

Some goober at the Dell assembly plant put a ton of them together like that. Almost every 4600 and 4700 I had to work on had the fan installed backwards and in turn most everything inside the case would overheat, causing RAM to fry in almost every case.

Turn that fan around and just use the case it is already in.
 
If load temps aren't satisfactory after checking them I would just grab a cheap low speed 80mm fan and zip tie it on there. Even a few hundred rpm blowing air at the heat sink will help significantly. And as said def keep the case fan and as an exhaust.

Like I said though, I can't keep it in this case. I'm attaching a lot more hard drives to it than it has room for and putting it all in a bigger full atx case I had lying around.

However, it looks like I can't even use the heatsink it came with, It was screwing into a elevated backplate on the dell, which isn't on my fulltower.

So I can just use a regular lga 775 heatsink?
 
If the mobo has the same holes as the other 775 boards do, you should be able to use any heatsink that is made for a 775 mobo.

Nope, those boards use a non-standard mouting arrangement.

What you could do is snip the mounting backplate off the old case, and then mount it that way. If I remember right, the back plate is only held on by a small strip in each corner.

You don't have to worry about shorting anything out since there is a plastic insulation sheet on the back of the board where the backplate mounts to the heatsink mount.

The cpu heatsink is too hot to touch.... I can't look at temps yet because it's taking a while to install. But I could superglue a fan to somewhere on the case so that the cpu heatsink gets more airflow...is that a bad idea? It wouldn't be touching the hot heatsink
 
Maybe superglue it to the bottom of the power supply so it's as close to the heatsink as possible.
 
I've actually glued a fan to the bottom of the green CPU shroud thingy before, to improve cooling to a video card. I also put a bead of hot glue on the bottom of the fan, so it could rest gently on the card below it. Pretty ghetto, but it helped a lot.

Are you still using the shroud and exhaust fan? That's designed to pull air through the heatsink and out of the case, so you're drastically reducing its cooling ability without that piece.

Superglue probably isn't going to hold up very well to the vibration of the fan.

I have made fan brackets out of slot covers before. They are real easy to bend, and pretty much anywhere you can attach them with a screw works like a charm.

Is there an exhause fan hole so you could possibly mount the stock fan and shroud somehow?

For that heatsink to work properly, you really need to have it shrouded like it was before.

Or, if you really wanted, you could get one of the higher end 46/4700 heatpipe heatsinks and just mount 1 or 2 80mm fans to it.

hey i have several of those dell heatpipe heatsinks and i will give it to you if you will pay shipping it would be like 5 bucks and you can have it but they make all the diference in the world they realy do i think it is dells apempt at the scythe ninja but it works
 
Thanks, that fan is definitely keeping it much much cooler. I also tied the fan to the bar using twist ties, so if the superglue fails, the fan isn't going to go anywhere.
