How well do these fold?

My question is.. how well do these things fold. I know every MHz counts, but it's a dual core 2.66 P4. Are these things even worth considering?

I don't see why you wouldn't consider it.

#1 - Dual core - one power supply, one stick of RAM, and you're good to go.
#2 - Price per gigahertz is pretty damn good. You get 5.33 GHz for $131 ($24.58/GHz). The next best from Intel is the 2.8 GHz at $220 ($39.28/GHz). Best from AMD is 2.0 GHz at $295 ($73.75/GHz).

I don't know about how much energy it takes - probably 95W (the 820 @ 2.8 GHz takes 95W), but it's less than an AMD dual core. My Athlons run at 62W according to this and run at 1/4 to 1/5 of the power of this chip...

Seems like a good deal to me.

I don't currently have any Pentiums folding either so can't make any direct comparisons, however, for the price, I don't think it could be beat. Processors between $125 and $135 at Newegg:

Athlon 2600: 2.083 GHz
Athlon 64 3200: 2.2 GHz
Pentium 4: 2.8 GHz
Pentium D 805: 2.66 GHz x2

I doubt any of those could come close to competing with the Pentium D 805. Even if AMD outfolds P4s, the sheer amount of GHz over any AMD would easily outperform. Add to that you only need one mobo, one stick of RAM, one hard drive, etc...for the Points Per Dollar, this has to be the best option out there right now.

I agree, I don't see how you can beat the 805 right now even with its power reqs and heat output. I feel like this thing at around 3.6-4ghz would be right up there with a 3800+X2 at 2.6 or so. You'd need good cooling for both and a fairly decent mobo either way so if its only gonna be used for folding this thing could be a beast. But if you're building an all purpose box that you'll be using for gaming as well I'd still go X2 for its better gaming performance and lower power consumption.

I'd also like to say that if you've got money to burn for 24/7 folding boxen then you probly don't have power bill concerns anyway. Putting together a couple of these would give you a good boost in PPD.

It is a good start, but the numbers can't be right. An A643200+ can't keep up with a 3800X2.

Though if i trust some numbers and some not, it looks like if I can get it to 3.6GHz, it will be on par with a 3800 for a lot less $$$

Yeah, I didnt take a close look at the numbers before, they dont seem entirely accurate. The 3200+ and the X2 3800+ are both mine, they are both actually overclocked the same, 2.4ghz, and they do roughly 150 and 300ppd respectively. I also have some P4 3.0ghz machines I have used in the past, they only put out around 100ppd tho.

I recently turned on my P-4 2.8 laptop to fold. Problem is my 754 Newcastle crushes it at only 2.0 gigs.

On time less WU’s of the same value the P-4 take about 6 min per frame while the 754 takes only 4 min per frame.

The Intel may be cheaper to buy outright but the cost of running it is still the same as the AMD.

My best analogy would be it would be like buy one of those hybrid cars that get 50 mpg. Nice fuel economy but at almost 30k a copy it will take a gillizion years to recover your costs.

You can over clock Intel CPU’s till you are blue in the face but AMD still has the edge on math and that is what folding is all about.

These days a typical 3800 X-2 will do 2.5 to 2.6 easy and many will do 2.7 and over. I’d spend the few bucks extra and do the AMD. In fact I am about to add another 3800 X-2 and shut down the 754 for cost efficiency.
