looking to buy a new high resolution monitor for dual monitor setup. The only problem is i would like a model that has the option to put the screen vertical on my stand as oposed to the typical horizontal setup. (goto get the full hardforums page goin on the sidelines like i see so many of you doing.) Is there a certain model that comes with a stand for doing this or is it done solely through the graphics card?

You mean to pivot it vertically? You just have to look for monitors that come with a pivot stand, then in the graphics drivers you tell it to rotate the image. There's nothing special about the monitors, you can get any monitor and put it on its side then tell the graphics card drivers to rotate the image. Its just convenient if it actually comes with a pivot stand so you dont have to rig up some dodgy stand yourself.

I'm not sure how to do it with ATI, but for nVidia, go into the nVidia control panel and select "rotate display" which is an option on the menu on the left side of the control panel window.

yeah to pivot. I can probly figure out the nvidia graphics card side. I just wanted to know what to look for when searching for this particular kind of stand on a monitor. basically i dont want to buy a SAMSUNG 23" LCD, get it out of the box and find out i cant pivot the screen to my liking.

That being said what models have this option or what do i search for to find it on my own, is it just look for ones that say pivot? ...thats really all i was asking since i dont know too much about it.

As long as your monitor is compatible with VESA mount (this is usually mentioned in the spec), you can replace your monitor stand with an Ergotron Neo-Flex stand that support pivoting.

The 2343BWX monitor you linked supports VESA mount (says "Wall Mount Compatability: 100mm" in the spec). The Neo-Flex stand is around $50.

If you do an "Advanced Search" over at Newegg, you can look at the Stand Adjustments field and select a combination that contains "Pivot". There will be a few different combinations.

If there is a monitor you want to buy and it does not have pivot, then look in the specs to see if it is VESA compatible (either 100mm x 100mm or 75mm x 75mm). If it is then can attached it to the following stand which will allow you to pivot any VESA compatible monitor. You will need to use ATI's or nVidia's control panel to actually "rotate the displayed image".

Be warned: TN panels look REALLY bad when rotated 90 degrees. The viewing angles issue really kicks in when you do that.

Been looking for a way to rotate my 22" monitor too. Unfortunately, the local stands i can find only support up to 19" :(

@evilsofa
Thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately, shipping would atleast double the cost. that's why i don't use it. My sister actually bought a new laptop while she was in the US because that $1000 laptop she saw cost $1500 locally because of shipping costs. The importation tax is just too much. They even ignore the Florence Treaty and bookstores are grumbling coz their $10,000 shipment cost $4,000 to get through customs.

Sorry, but shipping is not an option.

An excellent point about TN film panels and rotated displays - they look terrible this way because the poor vertical angles have now become horizontal.
