How to tweak OC'd system - getting data corruption just now :(

Hi guys,

Got what is probably a very simple overclocking question.

Ive been running my Q6600 G0 at 3GHz on its stock cooler since I got my new PC. Running coretemp and prime95 didnt show up any issues so thats been ok since November.

However I recently installed a new hard drive and was copying 100gb of HDV AVI files for video editing and decided to do a file compare afterwards to make sure my drive was ok. To cut a long story short there were errors as the files didnt match and after trying this and trying that it looks like its down to the system being overclocked.

When copying data the CPU isnt being taxed at all so I dont think its overclocking the chip thats the problem, more the motherboard or system bus but thats where my knowledge ends as the last time I OC'd something it was a Celeron 300A and it was a very simple job.

Im running a Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard, latest F11 BIOS and GEiL DDR2 value memory (BIOS reports 800MHz for it).

What things should I try first to keep my system OC'd but running stable.

As I said, the PC seems fine, been playing CSS, Crysis, doing video editing in Sony Vegas with no apparent problems, but obviously something is amiss if file copy ok when standard but I get CRC/MD5 differences when copying OC'd

Thanks for you help folks,

R.

Whats your settings for your OC? ie vcore, nb, sb, memory etc.

If your OC settings are on auto, id get into bios and manually set everything along with pci-e @ 100 if allowed. Set setting for memory @ factory defaults.

Best to give your cpu sllight bump for voltages and run memtest. Something is not stable and could result in corrupt windows install.

Also monitor your cpu/HD/case temps via real temp/coretemp and speedfan. GL.

I've pretty much left everything as defaulted by the BIOS. I just set the multiplier to manual and went to 333x9, leaving the PCI-e at 100 and keeping the memory at 800

Im at work just now so cant grab the exact info but I think thats right.

What parts should I increase and by how much do you think ?

Many thanks,

R.

Set cpu vcore to min 1.35 and whatever your memory timings are with corresponding voltage. Never leave settings on auto, your just asking for trouble.

Btw whats the hardware in question, include memory timings @ stock volts and current cpu vcore.

My first guess: PCIe clock

When raising the FSB, the PCIe clock will rise too if not being lock at a certain frequency. If your system ran fine prior to upgrading the HDD chances are, that the new drive (most likely a SATA Model) reacts quite sensitive to out-of-spec clocks. So, if the PCIe clock isn't locked already, try 100/101MHz.

I have 4 SATA Samsung HDDs and every single one reacts differently to higher PCIe clocks. One of them will crap out at a mere 110MHz while another one works fine past 118MHz.

Heres a dump from CPUZ, it should give you all the details in the one go.

Thanks for your help folks.

you are not even overclocking according to that. did you think you were? some gigabyte boards have a nasty tendency to reset all your settings without telling you.

i'm thinking he probably set things to stock to make sure it was the o/c that was causing the corruption

Well people were asking about his speeds and ratios, would not make a lot of sense to reset the chip to defaults before posting those up.
