Is their a free application that will help me adjust my monitor settings. Helps with contrast/brightness/gamma. that type of thing. Something that will help your standard idiot.(me)

I would like that too if someone can provide some software.

I know hardware you can try its called X-rite or Spyder 2, I didn't try them still researching about them if they actually help.

Adjusting brightness and contrast is something software can't do, because how can the software know what is comfortable for your eyes?

Try this guide for basic brightness and contrast settings:

Adjusting for correct color is best done with a hardware colorimeter (they start at $60 or so) but you can find premade ICC profiles that may give your monitor more correct color. See the Anandtech MLD Thread, particularly the Calibration section, for more info.
