How to test 5.1 Audio Capabilities

Is there a good utility out there that will let me test if my 5.1 audio is really working? I suspect that it is, the SoundStorm utility tells me that it is working because it identifies all the speakers in the test output, but is there any real way to know if games and other programs can use the 5.1 output? I ask mostly because I want to be able to hear Doom 3 in full surround :D
 
Put your ear really close to the speakers and listen. If there is sound coming out of them then they are working. :p
