How to slow a tornado?

I have a 92mm Tornado that just got replaced with a 92mm Enermax (65 CFM), but I'd still like to use the tornado.

I don't really want to get a fan controller, and I remember seeing a thread about a person with a Tornado that modded a molex somehow to reduce the voltage. It seems like he had the red wire going from the tornado to the yellow wire (instead of the red) on this power supply molex.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about, or know how to do this?

You run the Positive line into the 12v rail and the negative line into the 5v rail. It gives you 7v.

How would I go about doing that? Which one is the 5V and which is the 12V?

Do I run the 12V wire on the Fan's molex to the 5V wire on the PSU's molex?

Or Do I Just switch the 12V wire and the 5V wire on the Fan's molex?

Take the red wire from your fan. connect it to the yellow wire on a molex from your PSU. Take the blake wire from your fan. Plug it into the red wire on the molex from your PSU. Voila, done. If your fan has the speed sensor thing, you could leave that on the normal fan thing and plug that into the fan header.

or if 7v is still too fast, you could try running it at 5v, fan positive [red] to red wire on molex and fan negative [black] to the black ground adjacent to the red one on the molex.

I have an antec psu, and it has a couple "fan only" molex connectors. Should I try using one of these first?

just USE A POT!!!!!!!!!!!!! since 7v may still be too loud or fast and 5v maybe too slow to be effective

Hook it up to the Fan Only plug from your PSU. If it's still not like you want it, start cutting wires as mentioned above.

too bad A POT WOULD OVERHEAT AND BURN WITH THAT LEVEL OF CURRENT WITHOUT A REGULATOR!!!!!!

I went to this site: FAN VOLT MOD

In the before picture, the FAN is getting a 12v wire, and a ground wire.

In the after picture, it looks like the fan is getting a 12v wire and a 5v wire, but no ground wire. I'm not sure if I understand how this makes 7v..

whats a regulator?

also, does pots have set resistance or TOTALLY variable?...meaning lets say the max is 200 ohms....and minimum is 0 ohms.... is it set intervals like you can turn it and set it at any 50 ohms so you can only set it at 50, 100, 150, and 200

OR is it that you can totally set it at anywhere you want it to be?

There are both types, but the most popular is the kind that doesn't do steps, that you can set wherever you want.

And a regulator regulates the voltage, so far as I know.

How many amps do Tornados pull? There might be some really high tollerence POTs somewhere that I can find...

well, that was kinda obvious, lol

so how does it regulate the voltage and for what purpose?
