DONT FUCKING DO IT
I work there
If a little bump here and there will destroy your computer.. simple
DONT FUCKING DO IT
you can be as careful as possible, but the package still has to ride on the belt system, and it will get bumped and jarred.
as the old thread said, he went from chicago to somewhere in cali? THATS A LOT OF FUCKING HUBS TO GO THROUGH....
it didnt just go into a semi in chicago and get off in cali, it went onto a truck, into the chigago hub, it was loaded onto a trailer, and passed through probably 5 or 6 hubs before it ended up in california. at least 4 people will touch your package per hub, not including the intial loading, in order that is:
UNLOADER
this guy unloads the semi trailer full of your stuff onto a conveyor belt with the label facing up, the trailer is packed 10ft tall with boxes, if yours is heavy, it WILL BE ON THE BOTTOM. which means it WILL BE SUPPORTING ALL OF THE WEIGHT OF THE PACKAGES ABOVE. this could be yay or nay.. if your package is on the top, it might fall to the floor, other than that, it should be safe.
SORTER
this guy looks for the label, which better be on the top, or youre fucked and asking for trouble. generally nothing will happen to your package at this stage
PICKOFF
this guy takes it off the area specific conveyor and pushes it onto a slide going to the right load door. pretty minimal package handling, they slide it off the belt onto a slide that goes to the loaders conveyor.
LOADER
this is the guy thats going to fuck you. he will ram it up your ass. they are lazy sons of bitches that dont fucking care a bout anything. they stack the packages in the truck, stepping on them if they have to reach higher to toss a small package on top of the load.
this repeats itself at each hub, unless your package is wrongly sorted or picked off, then it goes through the system again until it reaches the correct destination.
at my hub, average flow is between 125,000 and 200,000 packages per shift at around 45,000 packages per hour. thats a lot of fucking packages, they make you go fast, if you dont go fast you get fired.
so your package's safety is pretty much up to the individuals that your package comes in contact with.
me, working there.. i would never ship a pc, monitor, or anything common sense deems FRAGILE.
BUT, on the other side of the coin..
dell, compaq, and gateway all ship computers through our hub. lexmark, HP, epson, etc all ship printers through the hub.. if they werent satisfied then im sure they would not have a corporate UPS account..
and.. a tip for shipping stuff.
USE A NEW BOX!!
if you're shipping something.. try to use the materials it came in from the store.. most likely the store got it through a shipping carrier just like UPS.. i see shit going from best buy to best buy all the time.. if you cant use the original box.. then use a bigger box than necessary..k? bigger boxes are easier to pick up. there is nothing harder to grasp than a 45lb box the size of 5 dvd's stacked on top of eachother, that shit is going to get dropped i can guarentee it.
USE LOTS OF PACKING TAPE!!!
not duct tape
not masking tape
packing tape, yes, packing tape.
tape up ALL SEAMS... go 360* around the box each way twice, just to make sure, a roll of tape is like a few dollars compared to your shit spilling out ont o the floor. i cant count the number of times some shithead ships a 50lb box of 20,000 screws/bolts/nuts and uses some box that was in their garage for the past 15 years.. it breaks, and half the stuff is lost. cant really do anything about it...
and for crying out loud, put the label on the top!! and remember this shit rides on conveyor belts with barcode scanners that try to read the barcode, the label needs to be on a side where it will be facing up. dont put that shit on the tip end of a 5ft long 6"x6" rectangular box, that just makes people angry.
if you cant do all of the above.. and really... who cant? its gonna cost like $3 in packing materials to do anything heavy RIGHT.
if you still cant/dont want to, then dont ship your stuff, FedEx is smaller time than UPS, so maybe it'll be safe, but probably not. maybe try the USPS? i'm sure they arent going to try to dick you around on insurance claims, you know, being all official and what not..
hopefully this can help some of you avoid problems in the future..
