Currently running a lowly 200GB with a 2MB buffer (eek, I know!) Have a 300GB Diamonback 10 16MB coming in tomorrow.

Definitely plan on putting the media files on the 200GB, but where to put games and Windows? Both on the new one?

partitioning is a highly personalized thing
at the very least Id seperate the OS and aps from your data
then ghost the completed install after its patched, secured and tweaked
so that in an emergency a complete restore is possible within half an hour
thus there are decided advantages to maintaing both the OS and registry dependent aps on the same partition,
you can also mount volumes as folders in NTFS so "data" folders that you want seperate can be on a different partition (My Documents for instance)and that way a restore of the OS will immediately look to the mounted drive and pickup the data added since you ghosted the OS install.

I also run a dual boot, which is very handy for looking sideways into a damaged install
allowing you to manually replace the registry, root out malware which isnt generally bootstrapped into memory since its dependent on the infected OS to do that, ect.

generally speaking employ primary partitions for everything
(my example above has a logical drive on an extended partition)
they are totally independent of each other, but say if I where to get rid of the C: partition above Id also loose the E: partition since the extended partition is dependent on the primary

your limited to either 4 primary partitions per HDD or 3 primary and one extended partition with its own logical drives natively under Windows (you can employ boot managers to get around that)
the edition of Ghost that works from within the OS however doesnt like partitions full up and has nowhere to write code for reboots, thus if you do that a FDD is required

your System partition is the one with the bootstrap files you need (ntldr & boot.ini)
it would be the boot partition as well in a single boot senerio, in a dual boot there are advantages to default booting into the 2nd install (thus if its damaged those files are still available)
 
Thanks, I'm definitely looking forward to getting this started. Never played much with partitions other than having to create that 60GB-ish partition since Windows didn't support over 133GB on a partition until the first SP was released.

Do you run anything special to setup your partitions? I'm not sure if Partition Magic would come into play here or not.
 
I create partitions with Disk Management
Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc
or the install CD

I resize or move partitions with Partition Magic

I never merge partitions (very bad idea)
in partition magic do one thing at a time and apply it, reboot if necessary
98% of the fuckups is someone trying to do multiple things (resive, move, create ect)

The basic setup I have in mind is:

10GB Partition for Windows
10GB of free space to let a Fedora install configure
then the remaining space in it's own partition for apps/etc.

Once I have Windows installed, I will ghost the Windows partition to the old drive in another 10GB partition for restoration reasons, then put the remaining space in another partition for media files.

Sound good?
 
well that way you have added complications with the aps during a reinstall
you can keep on top of that of course, but having registry dependent aps on the same partition generally makes some sense

if you look above youll see my OS (W2K) + aps partition as E:

that would include the following registry dependent aps :p

+ service packs and hotfixes + most of my none registry dependent aps (though they wouldnt be on this list)
but not IE, I ripped IE out :p

all told E: has 6.03GB used and 3.29GB free
 
I was too impatient, rofl.

Anyways, I take it there's not an easy way to tell if an app will be registry dependant or not?
