How to run games in windowed mode?

I have a widescreen monitor, so running games at, say, 1024x768 causes everything to turn fat and short since the monitor stretches everything out to the width.

Does anyone know how I could play fullscreen games in windowed mode?

It's been a while so I could be wrong on this but I seem to remember an option when you right click on an icon and go to properties. There should be a tab that deals with running in fullscreen or windowed mode. You might try that. I don't really know if it works to set a game in windowed mode because I've never really tried it though.
