I want to remove shadows from the text under the icons on my desktop in XP because it looks like crap with the shadow. I know you can do it for drop down menus, but any idea how to remove the drop shadow from the text? Heres what I'm talking about:

windows key + pause key
'Advanced' tab
'Settings' button (in performance section)
uncheck 'Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop'
'Apply' button

and to change the background color, just go into Display Properties and select the color from the dropdown

Sometimes my desktop wallpaper changes and it's not against a solid background like above any more so is there a way of choosing "clear/transparent" as a color?

Thanks for the reply.

I don't know a way to do what you want from within windows but you could try messing with the fonts to find one that works well. You can also make the icon text bold (right click on desktop - properties - appearance - advanced which could make it look better.

Well the font I'm using is the Vista one which I love so I'm not gonna change it. I'll try the bold thing, thanks.
