I have a laptop that I access a desktop with remotely on my same home network. I want to be able to do this but when I'm finished, put the desktop to sleep. Can someone help me set this up? Please & thank-you

Barring a program that will do this for you, the only option I see fit is for you to set up your desktop for magic packet. This way, the machine will turn on when you access it from the laptop; in turn, you can set the sleep time to something like 5-10 minutes, after which, of course, the desktop will automatically sleep by itself.

Here are some links on magic packet.

Is it XP or Vista, because I have the same setup, I remote into my desktop at home from work, which I have always in a S4 sleep(hibernate) state. I basically log into my router and then use its WOL command to wake up my computer. Then once Im done with my computer, in Vista you can do shutdown in command prompt and there is an option to put it back into hibernate. Could make a batch file for this and make a shortcut on desktop.

In XP it doesnt look like the shutdown supports any sort of sleep / hibernate input variable =(

Also, regards to amj786 post, WOL or magic packet is only for waking up PC's it does not shut them down.

Exactly the point. You keep the computer off, but use WOL to wake it up. After a period of inactivity (when you finish your remote session), if you have Windows set to automatically Hibernate or Suspend, this should happen. So this basically gets the job done.
