I'm desperate to recover 120GB of files from a hard drive. How can this be done when the old hard drive is corrupted?

Use PhotoRec

yes it sounds like a photo program but it's much more than that.

I've used it several times to get data back, I recently had a drive that had a corrupt MFT and it got EVERYTHING back for me. Only drawback is that it renames everything to like 1,2,3,4,5 etc but at least I got all my data back! So I was happy!

Recuva Portable might work as well. I run that off a USB Flash Drive, with PortableApps.com Suite loaded.

actually you're in luck!

Giveaway of the Day website is giving a free version of Partition Table Doctor

from the site:

The Partition Table Doctor is a data recovery software for hard disk partition recovery. This versatile tool would automatically check and repair the master boot record, partition table, and the bad boot sector of the partition, to recover FAT16/FAT32/NTFS/NTFS5/EXT2/EXT3/SWAP partitions on various hard disk drives.

It can create an emergency floppy disk or a bootable CD to recover the bad partition even if your operating system fails to boot.
