in games with high fps eg quake 3 where it is optimal to have 125fps.

how can i prevent tearing w/o caping my fps at 60hrz? on a dell 2007wfp

vsync is the only way to really eliminate it...I'm sure your monitor can be changed to like 75Hz though most LCDs can. You could try to set the FPS cap manually at like 80 to see if that helps at all for another solution.

so is vsync something lcd users should turn off?

how do u do that?

thnks

You want to turn on vsync :)

Just be weary that you can experience huge performance drops if your computer can't keep up with 60fps+. Triple buffering would fix this problem but then games will feel sluggish.

enable vsync and triple buffering.

Without vsync the higher your FPS the worse the tearing will be. 125FPS will definately show a lot of tearing on an LCD because it has a locked refresh rate of 60hz.

Your other choice would be to get rid of the LCD and go back to a CRT until 100hz+ LCD panels become popular and cheap.

I always forced v-snyc off until I got an lcd...now i've found that it's better to leave it on by default for most games.

Problem is if he enables vsync in Quake3 he won't be able to pull off some of the jumps in the game. Some of them actually require 125fps.

Are there anymore tweaks for lcd's and gaming with a 7800gt for better in game performance?

Just thought I'd ask

thanx

Very true. You guys have to remember quake3 is one of the fastest fps ever made. You need to draw the game at 125fps, not only for the jumping and the pysics, but to pull off snap rail shots. To play q3 on a high level, you need vsync disabled. Another thing about vsync is it takes something like two extra frames drawn to be rendered on the visual screen, which takes a few ms longer. Your best bet is to atleast change it to 75 htz and definetly find a way to force a higher refresh rate. Will reforce work? I play it at 75 htz and don't notice the tearing with the 922, but everyone is different. GL

well if you have a monitor that can use 125hz you can have vsync on. but since i have the flat paneli cant do that.

n00b question: how do i turn on vsync to begin with? somewhere in control panel?

yes its in the control panel. you can leave the vsync on application controlled in the Nvidia control panel since most games allow you turn vsync on/off in the game menu. if you turn it on in the control panel it will force it on in every game.

If you're a competetive Quake 3 player, I honestly think you're going to have trouble with any LCD.

VSync will cause enough input lag that you will notice a sluggishness to your mouse movements, so you will probably want to leave it off.

If you can get your LCD to run at 75Hz it would likely help, but would not eliminate the problem.

That's about all you can do. Personally, if I ever go back to playing fast paced FPS games, I just temporarily swap my 24" LCD with my old 21" CRT. No LCD can come close to the 100+ Hz refresh of a CRT in a game like Q3.

I noticed my new Acer has a bit of tearing just browsing the web, like a link with lots of pictures. If you scroll it vertically fast, you get tearing. Is that typical of LCDs?

Problem with vsync on is that in some games it can cause hitching, also in some games vsync can cause the frame rate to be half of the refresh rate, 60hz LCD can mean 30fps in some games with vsync on. Turn off vsync and you get horrible tearing in some games. LCD's are really not optimal for gaming at all but the mnanufacturers lie to you and make out they are great for gaming on. They are lieing scumbags. I'm using widescreen LCD right now but I can see myself going back to my 21" CRT in the near future.

The problem with vsync for the OP is that he is playing Quake 3, a game in which 125 FPS is often necessary because of how the physics system works. If you don't get steady, particular FPS in that game, you can't jump as high. I realize this sounds like a fairy tale, but its a true limitation of the engine.

This man speaks the truth. My VX922 gets the job done for quake3, however if I used it to make money while playing I would have to use my trusty 21" CRT. I use the 922 competetivly but there is no money involved, just bragging rights. I just like having the extra desk space. Also rumor has it, that in quake3 there is a bug in the game that requires 125 fps for the best physics. All other fps only need atleast 60 fps to feel fluid. Suposedly it's been proven..

The truth of the matter is that crt technology has had 60 years or so to mature and none of the current newer technologies (lcd, plasma, DLP) have caught up yet. Even the most hardcore high end plasma owning a/v enthusiast will admit that nothing can touch the PQ of a high end crt. SED looks promising but I'm sure there will be a price premium for the first couple years.

edit- What ever happened to the "slim crt" development I heard about a while back? I would be willing to add 3-4 inches of casing depth in back of my screen for that.

I remember reading something about a focus problem on them so perhaps they stopped development. I also remember seeing slim crt monitors in a Mac store once. At least I think they were crt.
