Here is the deal, at work we had to move some rack servers in the rack to make room for new equipment, problem, the rack moust servers sit on a shelf because the rack mount hard ware doesn't fit our rack and moving the shelf with the servers on it would be too heavy (even with an ex-football player in our department).

So the McGyver in all of us kicked in and we devised a plan. We tied PC power cords to tie the servers to the shelf above and used those to raise and hold the servers while we unscrewed and raised the shelf.

I don't care who you are, there is always the need to jerry-rig from time to time.

I think I'd wait for a an extended outage to move those. We have racks and racks of those boxes....I'd be sent home for doing something like that.

LOL....

Just built a dl360 (top server) last night....our old Proliant 7000 Quad Xeon Exchange Server is getting long in the tooth...time to retire that fire breathing dragon.

when you said rackmount servers I thought you meant some older heavy as hell ones , like 4U cases made of steel , lol

I have a similar NAS device from hp like that, it's not really that heavy so overall good plan and great execution :D

PS: They don't fit my rack either, f-ing things... I'm no expert on racks, but when you read about "standard" width and fit you would expect it to be close to fitting, but the goddamn rails they use are so retarded that I wanted to beat an HP engineer senseless with them.

Curious what brand rack it is where it doesn't fit...I've installed lots of Compaq/HP servers, right along with IBM and Dells....I usually use APC Netshelter cabinets, but I've installed in other brands.

You have a voice equip cabinet?

not sure, I inherited it with the job, it's some cheapo no brand rack but everything else fits into it so I can't really blame it on that (patch panels, cisco switches, GTA firewall, APC units etc...)
