How to mod NV5 Silencer?

I will be getting my NV5 Silencer in next week and as I understand it cools the RAM on a 6800GT with little tab things. Also as I understand, they cool pretty badly. Now, I want to put some OCZ BGA RAMsinks on my RAM, but don't know how I would go about removing the tabs from an NV5. Any Ideas?
 
I'll try hacksaw and then sanding it down... that should work decent, right? Don't really know how thick it is.

I had The NV5 and didn't have any issues with the mem cooling except....
I mounted the cooler without any paste to see how it fit. Well the mem wasn't making very good contact
so I did a lap dance on the cooler and it took alittle doing, but once it fit it did a swell job of cooling.
The base is made of copper and would require a real hack job on it, wouldn't be worth the effort IMO.

I coulda sworn someone did it around here... They said there was noticeable improvement too... I'll try anything short of w/c to get to the magic 1.2
 
wow you cant hit 1.2...damn i could hit 1.22 with the stock cooler on my old BFG 6800gt oc
 
I'm looking at the NV5 right now and you will have an interferance fit on 3 of the memsinks
Could never hit 1.2 got to 1.12 stable
Even with H20 can't hit 1.2
your milage may vary :)
Try doing a lap dance first
You can always cut em off after

Your picture is of the NV 5 rev. 1. The NV5 rev. 2 as I understand it doesn't even have the tabs; it works like the stock nVidia 6800's in that it uses thermal pads instead. Contact is improved with the RAM (since on some rev. 1's contact wasn't made with the heatsink at all) but cooling isn't that much better due to the pads having to be kind of thick and non-metal.

If you're really gung-ho about cooling, I'd buy a rev. 1 Silencer, and try to ensure the best contact by lapping the center to bring the cooler closer to the RAM chips until contact is guaranteed, and then lightly lapping the metal RAM tabs to smooth them. When I had a 6800, I smoothed mine out, it made contact just fine. Then use Arctic Silver 5 or Ceramique as your thermal compound.
