I intend on making my Viewsonic VP171b last as long as possible. Does the amount of times turned on and off affect it's life? Or does turning it off after every use help it last?

Or should I just set it to go into standby after 20 mins?
 
How long are you trying to make it last? I've been using the same LCD for 3 years now, and it's still fine. I don't turn it off, I just let it go into standby after 20 minutes of no use.
 
Seems like they take a lot of energy to start up, so I guess (no technical reason, just a -hopefully- logical observation) powering it on and off frequently would wear down the monitor.

Personally, I don't shut the monitor off unless I know I'm going to be away for an extended period of time (half-hour+). I would just do what JTY is doing and have it go on standby after 20 idle minutes.
 
I dont think that turning the lcd continuously on and off can hurt the monitor in any way. If you want the lcd to last as long as possible then just have the monitor set to turn off after a period time (5 min etc) or when its not in use. The less that you use the backlight the longer that it will last :). And if the backlight does fail after a few years or so then you can just get it replaced
