Hi-

I'm looking for a fan controller, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I think my big qualifier is that I would like this to be one of those kind that have the knobs sticking out the back through a PCI slot plate. Also, I need 3 knobs - one for each of the 3 fans in the case. I found one by Silverstone, but based on user reviews it seems to be of poor quality. Does anyone know if this is something I could try to build myself or possibly a retail option I haven't found yet? Any advice?

Yup you just need some rheostats (variable resistors) that can handle the wattage of your fans and splice it inline with the +12v wire.

This is correct.

What you need to consider is the size of the rheostats. The ones that you will need in order to control multiple fans are not small.

Ways to reduce size include using 3-way switches and power resistors for 12-7-5v operation (aka not using rheostats), or by using digital controllers like many modern fan controllers use.
