How To Know When...

The power company hates you.

I already know they hate me.. but this is what happened today.
I'm sitting around watching football, checking my fantasy stats. Pop. Power goes out. It was sunny and 65 today. The wind was blowing at up to 30 mph.. but it's freaking Kansas, we always have wind. Now, I have a generator, since I kinda live in the sticks, and am used to the power going out. Even if it is just a light rain. The generator isn't hooked up to everything though. Just the important stuff and just one computer.

This is not what has annoyed the crap out of me enough to make me come out of my lurker den and post. No.. one or two simple pops of power wouldn't do it. It was on and off for 30 minutes at a time from around 1pm to 4:30pm. And yet.. that would not have been enough either. No, it was what came after....power cycling every 45 seconds to 1 minute for over an hour. Turn on for a minute, turn off for a minute, turn on for a minute, turn off for a minute.. you get the idea. Ahh, the slow steady beep of UPSs having the power pulled from them, only to stop a minute later, then to start again a minute after that.

Luckily, nothing is blown up, not for lack of their trying though. And of course, they wouldn't be responsible if it did. Because being an inept piece of crap excuses you from all responsibilities.

End Rant

I'd just turn off the main breaker and drink any booze that was threatening to become warm. That really sucks though, but I'm petrified of power cycling like that damaging my stuff.

Yeah, I know there is a difference in quality between UPSs - active vs passive - and whatnot, but I'll never hook up my computer without one again. Do they have anything to say about the outages, an apology even??

I've gotten 3 letters in the last 5 months from them saying "Sorry, we know we suck"

I hope they at least said something about how they were going to make it better. That's just not acceptable. This isn't a third world country. Sorry about your luck.

you should be petrified.. during the california brown outs a few years ago i lost almost 9k dollars in computer hardware.. because they screwed up and instead of making sure everything was shut down.. it just kept cycling on and off for almost 2 hours...

btw i did make them pay me back for everything i lost because it was a screw up on their side.. they tried to pull the we are not responsible because it was my responsibility to turn my hardware off at the time specified for the brown out.. to bad they failed to follow that guideline and shut the power off 15 minutes early which showed up in their record.. didnt get all 9k dollars back but i got 5k out of it because i took it to small claims court so that i wouldnt have to pay a lawyer to get the extra 4k back..

in the end i lost 4 pc's and 3 laptops.. the power cycles fried the surge protectors on all my pc's and laptops which thus fried all the batteries on the laptops.. only 1 of my computers survived and probably would of died if i hadnt of gone out and tripped the main breaker on the house.. if only ups's had been cheaper back during that time none of this probably would of happened.. woot for crappy power companies and crapping wiring on old houses..

glad none of this can happen in this house since theres a surge protector on the main breaker..

Did they power company offer the "We don't charge you for power outage or lack of service" line.

God I loved that one.... took me a solid minute to figure out how to respond to that.

lol during the brown outs they weren't allowed to do that because PG&E is stupid and fails at everything..

but i get that all the time now when our power goes out.. though im sure their customer service is sick of listening to me calling in and yelling at them.. because we have way to many power surges out here where i live.. gets annoying watching the lights flickering on and off..
