I need some help to install Windows XP on my Vista computer. I bought that Dell C521 deal for $220 a couple weeks ago and I don’t know how to install XP on it. When I tried install from the CD in Vista it says “you have a newer version of windows” and that’s it. It there a ware I need to download or install it differently? Thanks.

Always start your installs by booting from the disc. As long as your data is backed up off the drive, if you had any stored there, boot from the XP disc, wipe the drive, and install XP.

sounds good but I tihnk I have restarted the computer with the xp disc in and it just starts up vista like regular. Do I have to go into the Bios or type in something while in the booting mode?

You have to make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the CD/DVD drives, and also hit a key to run setup, when it says to do so. If the XP setup detects an OS on the drive, it will give you this message, before continuing on to the installed OS.

If this is your first time doing this, you may want to ask for someone to walk you through it as you are doing the install.

Yes, you may need to change the 'Boot order' settings in BIOS Setup if your system refuses to boot from the Windows CD. You may also need to use a keypress when you get the onscreen message "Press a key to boot from CD" (or immediately after the POST tests if that message doesn't display).

If you are trying to replace Vista with XP you'll need to delete the Vista partition and then create a new partition in the then available drive space. If you are installing XP as a dual-boot with Vista you'll need to select a suitable partition for it. Either way, be sure to watch for the screen with partition data, and make sure any necessary changes are made before continuing with the install.

If you've added XP as a dual-boot Vista will no longer be bootable once the XP install is completed. Follow these instructions to repair the Vista bootloader and have your dual-boot menu available to you.
