Hey guys,

I've never done this before and I have some questions. I have a 2 year old PC and I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. I have a P8Z68 Deluxe Motherboard and I have a 500gb Western Digital drive as my boot drive. I also have 5 3tb Hitachi Internal drives in my PC. I was recommended that I could buy an SSD such as the Samsung 840 EVO and migrate my data over to the SSD using Windows 7's migration tool. Would this work? I want the fastest speed from the SSD (Sata 6gb/s). How do I connect the SSD to my P8Z68 Deluxe Motherboard? Do I connect the SSD to the intel sata 6b/s port which is the grey port? Any other connections from the SSD to my motherboard? Do I enable AHCI in bios? After I migrate all data over to the SSD Do I then switch to the SSD to be the boot drive in bios? Any other comments or suggestions?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, TechStuey05,

I've never used the migration tool so I can't comment on that. You can search this forum for cloning the current boot drive.

Connect the SSD to the Intel SATA Port for the best performance.

Enable AHCI in the BIOS and then disconnect all the current drives before installing the SDD. Once the SSD running reconnect the other drives.

Hope this helps and I'm sure others will stop by to offer their suggestion and/or correct anything I flubbed the du on.

When switching to an SSD you'll need to switch to AHCI in the BIOS for maximum performance. And honestly I have only had success after a format and reinstall of windows after the switch in BIOS, often times it wont boot. But, I would hook it up first and do an HDD Clone and see if you can boot from it in AHCI, sometimes it works, sometimes not. I wouldn't use any migration utilities in Windows... Never. Get a good HDD Cloning software, and clone your boot drive to the SSD. and then disconnect the OLD Boot drive and see if you can boot with the SSD. You should be able to without switching to AHCI.
