Okay, I am going to get a second hdd and use it as a storage drive in my system. My current hdd has all of my apps and os on it and when I put in the new hdd, that will not change...I want to store music, etc. on my new hdd. So, my question is after I get all my cables hooked up, jumpers set, etc (I will be adding an ata 100 IDE seagate 200gb hdd to my system.) where do I go from there? Partition and format the drive? If so, how or are there any links out there the show how to do this? I searched the microsoft site and found a good bit of stuff, but I was confused. I am not necessarily a noob at computers, but I am at hdds..never put in a new one, formatted one, etc. Btw, I am running xp home edition.

If its a brand new hard drive, then just plug it in (sounds like you know how to do that so I won't elaborate - just make sure that its plugged in at the right point at the IDE cable and also make sure the jumper is set to "slave" and that the other hard drive is master.)

Windows should recognize the new drive right off the bat as soon as its installed.

If its an old hard drive - Format, then install. OR plug it in, and then have windows reformat it.
(My computer - right click on the new drive, format.)

Hope this helps!

yea just do what he said. id plug it in and let windows do a quick format though.

plug the drive in, boot, goto computer management, Startment >settings>control panel> administrator tools>COmputer management> Diskmanagement tab on left> Selectr drive and partition, format, assign drive letter.
