I just moved into an apartment complex and am having trouble with wifi reception. The complex only has wireless and it is almost unusable. I can't move because my company is paying part of the rent. I complained and the manager let me try my computer in two other apartments, but they did not make any difference. I bought one of these for my desktop computer, but it doesn't help the reception at all. Any ideas? BTW, the reception is so bad that I cannot open any videos or large pictures. If I am able to open a site like MSN.COM, I consider it a good day if I can read the whole webpage.

Go to your local brick and mortar store, purchase an internal card and give that a whirl. If it works great, if not... you can take it back.

IS getting your own internet not an option?

This has been answered many many times in a thousand different ways...but

If you do not see a strong signal get this first:

Buy one of (each) of these.

http://www.amazon.com/Mini-PCI-E-Wireless-Card-Antennas/dp/B005Q751BA

http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Ultimate-633ANHMW-802-11n-Adapter/dp/B0038A9HSK/ref=pd_cp_pc_3

The above is the best radio you can buy for your PC .... and yes you get to put it together, and download the drivers directly from INTEL.

Changing the antennas is another whole topic and I don't recommend it unless you know exactly what that change will do in regards to the placement of the AP in the building and understand spatial channel assembly and MIMO operation.

If you see a strong signal and the connection quality is poor:

  • The AP is too far away or the walls are too thick.
  • The AP is overloaded. (too many other users)
  • There is another AP (or wireless device) interfering with the one you are trying to connect to.
