how to improve ram speed?

Hi,

I have an Asus P8Z68-v Pro motherboard with an i7-2600k. Currently at 4.9ghz and perfectly stable. But I want to figure out how to bump up the ram to the next level, it's currently at 1600. Next setting is 1833 I believe. I have 8gb (4 sticks) of "996829 - 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000 7-10-8-27 Blackline" in this system. Set at 1.65 volts.

I manually set the timing to 7-10-8-27 but the system is unstable above 1600 and I'm not sure what to change or if it's worth it?
 
You will probably need to bump up your IMC voltage to get higher than 1600.

I would also make sure to set all RAM timings manually... not just the main ones.
 
Thanks, I'm not familiar with IMC voltage? Also, the main timings (the first four) are the only ones I have access to, I can't find any other timings published.

The other timings should show up their default values when you go into BIOS.

I have found on my rig, that if i leave the extra settings to AUTO, it causes weird stability issues.. if I set them manually to what the BIOS detects them as, it works a lot better.

You may also have to play with the Memory data/control reference voltage.. but I kinda doubt it.

It could be your memory simply cannot handle the higher speeds. If your voltage is set to 1.65V and its unstable, you may just be limited to 1600Mhz. Going above 1.65V could be dangerous to your RAM. Most stability issues with RAM are due to voltage regulation, either they cannot handle more voltage or they are not getting enough voltage. There are several settings that also affect the voltage regulation, you could try using some of the voltage trim options and see if they help.

Try this setting: DRAM CTRL Vref (both A and B): As above, although the CTRL/CMD lines are not as “busy” as the DQ lines. Base is 50% of VDD (VDIMM). If making adjustments to Data (DQ) reference, then set the corresponding CMD/CTRL for that channel to the same value and see if it helps.
