How to get Outlook 2003 to remind me/warn me of holidays?

Hi - I use Outlook to keep me organized for school. It has my entire schedule on it, along with all of my homework. But now is there any way to add reminders in Outlook? I know that you can set reminders for tasks and calendar items - but what about seperately? I mean like it would be nice just to have a week warning about birthdays and whatnot - but I don't want that to be a calendar item or a task. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks!
