How to find the right fsb

Alright right now I'm at like 255FSB with a divider of 5:4, stock timings 2.5-3-3-6 and its being unstable. I was wondering how I go about finding the right fsb, memory timings and divider. I'm going to set my divider to 3:2 tomorrow and raise my voltage to 1.6. I can't right now because I'm at my dads house. My ram voltage is 2.75 which is max for my motherboard. I was just wondering how you guys go about finding the right fsb. What I was thinking is to find the max OC you can with zero errors and then underclock it alittle from there. Then try to tighten your timings as much as possible and lower the voltage as much as possible.

Does this sound correct? What would you do differently? Thanks !

You are on the right track young Jedi.

yup thats the way to go...

if u want u can try benching and difference stable settings...ie combinations of timings and FSB etc...and see what gives u the best performance overall...

How do you know where to start with cpu voltage and ram voltage and when?

For example... I have a Barton XP 3000+ with a 200 Mhz FSB. Right now I am running it at 200 Mhz FSB x 10.5. If I want to overclock this, here are my questions :

How much do I increase the FSB?
Do I increase the FSB first, then the multiplier?
At what point do I have to think about increasing CPU and / or ram voltage?
At what point do I have to worry about my video card not being able to handle the OC'ing? It is a Radeon 9800 Pro.

I am running Corsair XMS C2 Pro (the one with the lights).

I apologize if these questions are redundant. I think these are questions that a lot of us have. The problem is that they are answered in tiny bits and pieces in about 400 different posts. It would be great to have one post that answers these questions and others that I am forgetting to ask.

t's rally a trial and error process. If you up the fsb too much and the machine does not boot, then you know you are up too much.

You can go by 25mhz increment, till it give errors, the you go the last stable point and up by 5 mhz increment...etc...

Alright I try to boot up in @ 265 with a 3:2 ratio, and it just locks up. I boot up with 260, an I think its going to have an error like last time. I dont have a floppy do I cant do memtest so I need another program to test stability other than prime95. I also raised the voltage to 1.625 which didn't help at all. I'm guessing I've reached the limits and I should just be happy where I am :). Now I'm gunna try to tighten my ram timings and stuff.

I can do 255 with 3:2 fine, but I tried it with 5:4 and it just has an error after like 4 minutes. So I brought it down to 250 ugh and put my ratio back to 5:4 and my timings 2:3:3:6 Ok at this its even unstable... WOW I'm going to put my ram timings at 2.5:3:3:7
