How to empty this loop.. Please look! :)

Hello all.

I was wondering what I should do when I need to empty the water out of my loop. I bought two cutoff valves but don't know where to put them. Suggestions appreciated! Thanks..

PS . I would like to empty out the water with the system off since the pump can't run dry... so I'm thinking somewhere near the bottom, but, should I put a cut off valve down at the bottom and then use a disconnect to it to fill a bucket or something? I was also thinking of putting the second cut off valve on the top in the inlet of the res so it won't spill back.

I would put a t-line with a valve in between the pump and the rad :D that way you could just open up the valve and drain your water mixture into a bucket or whatever you have at your side :) that is how I would do it..... or you could just pull ur pump out of the case and hold it over a bucket while you disconnect one of the lines.... it might sound ghetto but it works :D
 
Thanks for the reply. I only have two cutoff valves for now. Here is the problem. No valves can be placed inside my internal box... so no valves between the pump and the heater core. However, the outlet valve of the pump is the one that goes to the heatercore...
The inlet valve is coming in from the bottom outside of the internal box. The heatercore is flowing to the CPU block at the top of the internal box.


How would I empty this system of water to change tubing or such? Where do I put the second cut off valve ? Or do I have to buy a bypass valve instead? Or do I change the loop to go RES -> heatercore -> pump -> CPU/GPU/NB -> RES?

Should I do it somehow with the system on? or off? Thanks...

By the way guys.. what I am worried about is running the pump to drain the loop with no water going into the pump (like my initial configuration) ...

If I couldn't put a tline with a valve between the pump and rad in the first set up picture, where else could I put it?

Plus got a link to more how a tline works? thanks...
 
Instead of draining the system, which requires another bleed when you refill it, do a system flush. What you do is disconnect the pump's intake then put a hose on the intake and stick it in a container with the new fluid. You put the hose you disconnected in another container and run the pump until the entire circuit has been cycled. Then reconnect the pump intake hose and you're good to go without bleeding again.

Okay I get that idea... but here's the question. How do I keep water from coming out when I disconnect the pump's intake to put the other hose on (which leads to a bucket full of water)? Won't there be water trying to get to the pump when the system is off?
 
Also.. the internal box in the picture will be more or less in accessible unless I remove some fans I'm having cool that box...

So I'd like to figure out a way to do this using either one or both of the two lines coming out from the internal box.

Oops.. also.. what happens if I want to switch a tube or remove a component? Won't I need the entire system dry?
 
Sure a little water will flow out, that's why you put a cutoff before the pump and after the pump, then when you disconnect the intake you can keep water from flowing out of the pump and out of the hose you're disconnecting. There will still be a little water, but you're going to be hard-pressed to get a dry fluid change done.

Thanks but again, how about if I don't want to do a fluid change, but a complete emptying of the water?

Why? You're not going to get all the water out of that rad without turning your computer upside down for a while.

Just in case I want to remove a pc component or switch out a card.
 
one thing your going to have to realize with watercooling is that it is always a pain no matter what you do to refill/bleed/etc. Swiftech has a system where there are 3 valves, and you attach two hoses, you can blow in one and force all the water out the other side. Then to refill you can just pour it in since its the highest point in the case. This seems to me to be the easiest way to do it. Their hoses are all 3/8" ID tho so if your going 1/2 you cant buy their kit.
 
Yeah.. one thing I don't want to have to do is turn this mutherfookin computer upside down, or syphon out any coolant with my mouth....

As far as the swifttech kit, I am using 1/2 ID tubing, 1/2 OD barbs....

Guys: What if I put a t-valve between the gpu and the northbridge, have the cutoff valve going to the res from the NB on, turn on the system and have the pump push the water out of the heatercore through the CPU block, the GPU block, down the t-valve into a bucket?

When I see the res empty out, I could then turn off the system, open the cutoff valve between the NB and the res by turning it off, and let the remaining water flow down throught the NB, down the t-valve into my exit tube. Would this work?
 
I really hope your system isn't so mickey-mouse that you have to disconnect hoses in order to change out components. Ever hear of putting slack in the lines?

No, but really. I haven't build a WC setup ever. I am doing this completely custom for the design so when it came down to how to flush the system... I was wondering what would be the best and easiest way.

One other method I thought of was what the original reply mentioned of putting a t-line between the pump and rad, and watching until the res empties.... then turning off the system... What do you think?
 
Without turning your case upside down you're going to leave quite a bit of water in the radiator.
 
I jsut turn my case upside down until the res is empty, then i take the tubes off teh res, put one in the coolant jug and blow on the other. A variant of the swiftech fbk method.

I'm thinking of getting some quick releases on the back of my res to make this easier though...only think keeping me from doing it is how to idiot-proof the eyetem so the hose doesn't jsut plop off one day....
 
Loke like in your setup the easiest thing to do is take out the fill plug and turn the machine over.
 
why not just disconnect whatever the pump output is connected to - put that tube into a container instead, and then run the pump to force all the water out... you won't run your pump dry because the entire system will have to drain before reaching the pump again - and you can just turn the pump off once it becomes almost emptied... ya just gotta time it right)
