How to disable AGP fast-write?

hey, for some reason CoD demos don't work for me a freeze up all the time when I try and play them. Now I don't really care about the demos but more about the full game not working. And what baffles me is that it ran fine on a compaq p4 2.0, 256 MB of RAM, a geforce 2 MX440, and a soundblaster live 5.1 sound card, but it freezes on my system.

So one of the suggestions was for me to disable this feature, and that someone else has done it and it fixed the problem they were having. So could someone tell me how to disable it using my card? (systm in sig)

Also what kind of performance hit will I take if when I disable this setting it will work?

Hey pbX, what's up...

Well, sorry I couldn't help you very much earlier on (I don't own an nvidia card at this point in time).

Most likely fast writes are off on the compaq system you speak of.

Anyways, have you updated your chipset drivers? This *might* allow you to change AGP fast writes in your nVidia control panel. My ATi control panel lets me change fast writes, but for some reason Nvidia's don't let you.

Do you have the latest Detonator drivers? That might work.

The third option is that you might be able to disable Fast Writes in BIOS if you have that option in your BIOS.

Another thing would be to try this program: nvMax, which lets you access a wide range of tweaks for nvidia cards using Detonator drivers.

That's all I can do to help, hope you have some luck.

Oh yeah, Fast Writes don't really affect performance that much, probably a performance increase of 1 - 5%, not very noticeable. It just lets the card bypass system memory and increase write speeds (I guess).

Yea, I was looking into that the other day, I have the lastest chipset drivers, and the latest nvidia drivers. The wierd thing is I really seem to think that I have seen this setting before somewhere. I just can't remember where.

yea, I looked but all I could find in any relation to AGP was the aperture size. ( I think I'm spelling that right)

The best thing to do is to download a bios editor, thats the only way of disabling and enabling fastwrites on some of the earlier geforces.

I know this because my geforce 3 ultra came with fastwrites off..... pain in the ass to turn on. But at least my computer said "welcome to my kingdom" at the bios startup :p

After reading up seems like most geforce 2 cards come with fastwrites disabled anyways. you should download a program that looks up mobo specs and can see if the motherboard even supports fastwrites. I would try Sisoft sandra, or some type of system information program.

ookay, I'm just completely lost. I was checking out my other system (the geforce 2) and it has options my system doesnt even have. Ine the display options advanced menu under my graphics card, it has a whole section called "AGP" mine doesnt have it, and thats where the fast write setting is!!

I'm going to try and download those new drivers (the 56.xx) and see if that works.

And yes, as was established before, fastwirtes is enabled on my system, and I can now confirm that it was disable on my other system

Also I'm going to try and use that program that you suggested to see if that will work.

okay, I was going through the program and I don't know how sure I feel about flashing the card BIOS, since if I screw it up, I don't have another PCI card to use to fix it.

Havn't tried the new drivers yet, but I'm starting to think that it might be the SiS chipset not allowing my to adjust the AGP slot through the nvidia control panel. have to look into that more.

I have never used bios editing software before but my fast writes is in the BIOS. CoD crashed all the time after 30 or less until I turned off fast writes. Other games stopped crashing whenever I overclocked the bus too. The performance difference was just about zero.
