how to check for bad sectors?

I have a few HDs laying around that I don't know if they are still good anymore, what kind of tests can i run on them to see if they are usable or not?

In windows chkdsk /r tries to locate bad sectors on NTFS volumes.You could also use the drive utilities that are supplied by your HDD manufacturer. I have heard that the hitachi tools work will all brands of HDDs, so that may be your best bet.

Use Hitachi's DFT on them (it does work on all brands), and do a thorough disk check, it'll tell you when it's done if it has bad sectors and can attempt to repair them if possible.
