how to check chip model XEON

i have a dual xeon 3.6 with 2mb L2 cache fsb @ 800mhz per chip.
i wanna know what kind of chip it is. i think its a nocona but i dont really have a clue.
i just wanna so so i can figure out if i can overclock it

If it's got 2mb L2 cache then it should be an Irwindale.

Damned if I know. I would imagine that you could provided the board that you have has the option. Whether or not they overclock well I could tell you. Intel and OEM boards don't give you that option so i wouldn't know.

well my system is a dell precision 670, i dont know what kind of board they use in these systems.
this duel xeon setup was supposed to hold me over till the dual core dual processor board and chip combos drop in price

you thought dual core was expensive so you bought a dual Irwindale xeon system?



sorry, that makes no sense. unless you got a killer deal on that system, it was likely much more expensive than a dual core rig..

got it for 1500, pretty good deal for dual 3.6 with 2mb fsb, all the ones i saw for this price were 1mb fsb.
what are the new dual core dual processor chips called and what motherboards support them?
does my motherboard support those chips?

looks like my system has the option of a multicore chip when you order it, i wonder if my momo supports the change?

you might need a bios update, but it probably should.

dual core xeons are hella expensive.

yea theres one on ebay right now i might buy. 700$ seems like a good price,
i wonder if its worth waiting for newer chips with faster speeds.

TBH, it would be slower than your current system.

two dual core 2.8ghz xeons would smoked by two single core 3.6ghz chips, unless you are doing VERY heavily multithreaded stuff.

thats cache, and has nothing to do with the FSB. the FSB on hte dual core chips is actually lower (667mhz vs 800mhz)

the extra cache will do a whole lotta nothing, its linked to those two extra cores... which again, do a whole lotta nothing unless you are doing something incredibly parallel.

i always thought that the larger the fsb the better speeds id have for rendering stuff..
i do alot of 3d and video editing so when i got this system i paid alittle more and got the 3.6 chips with 2mb fsb over the 1mb

You're not going to be able to overclock at all on a Dell. How much did you say you paid for the system, what are the complete specs? Because 3.6 2mb Xeon's are around $700 each...
