How to check a klipsch sub

I have a Promedia 5.1 sub, but don't have the wolume control pod for it. I do have speakers though. Is there some way to check if the sub/amp works without a control pod. Also klipsch sells promedia 5.1 ultra control pods. Would an ultra control work with an older non ultra sub/amp.
