how to change HD name

Hi all,
I need your suggestion about how to change HD names.

I've joust built a PC, and my motherboard has various IDE and SATA ports, where I have
connected:

HD1 (sata disk): SATA connector

HD2 (Ide disk): Ide connector number_1

cdrom_1: Ide connector number_2 (master)

cdrom_2: Ide connector number_2 (slave)


Everything works fine, and Windows XP shows the following:

HD1-- C:\

HD2-- F:\

Cdrom_1 -- D:\

Cdrom_2 -- E:\



Now, I'd like to change HD2 name from "F:\" to "D:\"

It seems to be a banal problem, but despite my trials (add/remove Jumpers, change Ide connectors, and so on...)
Windows always see the same Disk names.

Also disconnecting CDROM's, and attaching HD2 to their Ide connector,
XP always shows HD2="F:\"

Question: Is there any method to force HD2 to be "D:\" ?

Use Disk Management to relabel them:

Start -> Run -> 'compmgmt.msc'

Go to Disk Management, right click on the partition/drive you want to change the drive letter of and select 'Change Drive letter and Paths'

Hmm, it looks like you're looking at the wrong places.

Try this:

1. Go to Run, type 'diskmgmt.msc' and press enter.
2. Now you see all your partitions.
3. Right click a partition, and you should see something like 'Change drive letters and paths' or something like that.

BTW, you can't assign a letter that is already being used. For example, if you want to swap D: and F:, you need to first assign one of them, say D:, to something else, say Z:. Then assign F: to D:, then Z: back to F:.

And DON'T do this to the system partition.

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Right click on drive
3. Select rename.....................
