I have the klipsch 5.1 gmx and a max-3 mainboard with realtek ac97 onboard, it comes with a miniplug to rca y cable but can analog deliver surround or should i go with coax digital?! i dont understand why my sound card has a jack for front, center/sub, and rear when my whole 5.1 system only has one miniplug!!! what is a man to do with JUST ONE PLUG!? do i just plug it into the headphone jack? it doesnt seem like this would yield surround sound... if i get the digital coax and use the digital out, will this ammount to anything useful? i want surround for gaming!!! please tell me if i need a new soundcard i will do anything!!! i dont care about music or movies JUST games!! thanks

how to acheive surround?

I assume your talking about the Abit board. No need to use coaxial or optical spdif and if you did, you would have to send that signal to a decoder before your speakers could accept the signal. Front left and right is usually green, Rear left and right is usually black, and the sub/center channel is usually orange or yellow.
I suggest you invest in an external sound card though. They dont have to be expensive to offer good sound. SoundBlaster 5.1 cards are about 25.00, and the Envy 24 based cards are about the same.

yes i know what the plugs do and the Klipsch 5.1 gmx has a decoder... i am capable of using digital optical and coax as well as analog, i was asking why does the mobo have 3 jacks for front left and right rear left and right and center and sub when there is only a single miniplug coming from the entire system. which jack do i put it in? the green? all 5 speakers connect to the subwoofer which powers them, then the sub is connected to a GMX decoder which then plugs into the computer via a single cable (optical, coax, or analog rca)

We actually have very similar systems. I was looking at the manual for your MB and I couldn't see by the illustration that it gives you the option of setting one of those minijacks to output only the digital signal you need, This option may be under the spdif out tab of the sound card utility, if it is, activate it, then connect the miniplug to the jack that has been re-assigned.
Or as you said, you could use the optical connection.
