I have a Hercules 9800 PRO 128MB with the "pretty blue lights" however I want to be able to overclock it a tad more because I have had some not-so-amazing core o/c's. So I was thinking, a) Put some Artic Silver 3 on the spreader instead of unknown stuff. b) Put a VGA Artic Silencer on it. Both of which require me to be able to get the heatsink off.. Which I cant!!

Its bloody stuck! Is there anything special i need to do, to get it off??

Alright this is what you do....try squeeze and push at the same time.....it will pop right off.......make sure you hold the card sideways not touching any transistors.......sometimes there are other push pins that you need to pull a pin with a tweezer before you can squeeze from the other side........

just give it more power and you'll be able to get it off.....

goodluck

No, no, no... The Heatsink on the Herc. cards are COMPLETELY different from that of the Sapphire or base ATI. It has BOLTS and screws, etc..

if it has pins like the ones on an ATi card, you need a tweezer to pull the plug so to speak from the top side of the card.. and then the heatsink would be easier to remove.. always remember before removing a heatsink, burn it in, like run the card for 30 minutes or so rendering 3dmark03 nature scene for example or some other heavy stuff to make it hot.. then remove the pins and try and rotate the hsf slowly (twist it bothways) and it should pop right off!

screwdriver?

or if it has springs.. there are only two things you can do.. push the springs or pull them.. usually if you push them inside you should be able to twist them.. also can you slap a picture of that thing here so we can see how to remove the damn thing :p

I would run the card hot and then try to remove the HS.Try using a screwdriver and ever so gently remove the two screws.
when the screws are off real easy twist the HS to and frow. do not force it! Then get ye some isopropyl alcohol and swab the deck. I compared AS3 to Ceramique and found no real difference in temps. So I opt for the C due to its non conductiveness. Also got another 4c temp drop by lapping the GPU
Be brave, be gentle, Good Luck!

Remove any securing devices such a push through pins, screws etc and then heat up the Heatsink with a hair Dryer. The thicker the skin on ure hands, the easier it will twist off, otherwist, pop a rag over the heatsink and then apply the twist.

DO NOT LEVER IT, ie PRISE IT.....the cores are naked and u could damage the GPU's core. Twist & lift gently...its that easy!

If its been cemented on by someone else using that Artic Silver Epoxy Glue...forget it & buy another card! :D

I know ur all trying to be helpfull but what i want is somone WITH a hercules card to comment because although what you guys have said is true.. Most is only relevant for a stock heatsink..

(Sorry if i sound harsh)

The Hercules has a different heat sink retention menchanism than most 9800 Pros.

* It has no push pins
* The heat sink is not epoxied or glued on in any manner - heating or freezing will not help one bit
* The heat sink is bolted on from the rear.

You folks are trying to give advise but it's not correct.

Here's a picture of the rear of the Hercules 9800 Pro:

Note the 2 bolts on the rear plate.

I created this image previously to illustrate that the Zalman Cooler will not fit the Hercules 9800 Pro :(

Anyhow, you may need to remove the 3 little screws on the front fan cover. Beneath you'll find the top portion of the bolt head. You may need to use a screwdriver and a wrench to undo it. That's what I did.

It's not hard , you just need to use the right tools.

Good luck.

Thanks a LOT!! Finally somone that understands! lol..

I did wonder if it was somthing to do with those tiny screws and the bigger ones underneath them, however I found the little screws VERY hard to remove so I wasn't going to force them off too hard without knowing that it was definately what I HAD to do.

Also have you applied any non-stock cooling soloution to yours? If so what, and did it make any difference?

I just ordered a VGA Silencer for my Herclues 9800 Pro.

I haven't recieved it yet but when I do, I'll let you all know how it went.

Some people are reporting that there is a gap between the rear exaust plate and the the plastic exaust outlet with some video cards. I'm hoping that there will be no gap with the VGA Silencer (rev 2) and my Hercules 9800 Pro :)
